Your plant is a Bromeliad and looks like it's pretty healthy. There are many bromeliads and I don't know which one this is. You might surf through the database to see if you can spot yours. Or I bet someone else will drop in here and be able to give you the exact name.
Just curious. Have you had this plant very long? I don't want to give you any growing tips that you might already know.

Thank you Joan, so much. My mother was bought this plant for her 93rd birthday in August. She has dementia and is obsessed with knowing what it is. I've told her to water it sparingly as she likes to water her plants. Other than that, I couldn't look up care tips as I didn't know what it was. I do wish people would leave the care label on gifts.... Thanks for your reply. X

This amazing. I had one of these probably 10 years ago and lost it never knowing what it was other than knowing it was a bro Elias (a very broad encompassing group of plants). I didn't have pictures, so always had to rely on my ADD memory - and that didn't work out well! Lol! Seeing this post, I know this was my plant, and now it *should*be easy to ID. Hopefully someone will come along and know, but till then, I'm researching this! I'll be back!

By the way, it's either a vriesea variety or a tillandsia variety (leaning towards vriesea). They are two closely related genera. They can vary widely, but where they meet in the middle, they can be hard to distinguish.

@Carter - I think you got it, by George. Good work. I'm kinda surprised you could kill yours. I'm an expert at killing (or at least abusing) plants but don't think I ever killed a Bromeliad. When I lived in Austin I had way too many of them. I've also had my share of 'bros'.

@LindaHarr - I just knew for sure that someone would come along and give us the exact name, she said skeptically. Speaking of being skeptical, plant labels are handy, especially with a gift, but they are not always reliable. But yes, do tell her to water it sparingly. However, I think it might like to be misted so maybe you can help her with that. And be on the lookout for 'pups'. They are the offshoots that grow from the base of the mother ship plant and can be snipped off and potted and become all grown up. For your mother's sake, probably leaving the pups attached will keep the plant looking fuller. Ok. That's a guess. I've not grown this particular Bromeliad. But I think it was a lovely gift for her 93rd birthday.

@LindaHarr - forgot to mention but you should add your picture to the Plant Database. We all like to look at pictures. Plus you'll get an acorn.

I probably overwatered mine. At the time I don't think I had any other bromeliads, and I probably watered it like most of my other plants and it rotted. I have tons of broms now and am more familiar with their care.
