I cannot find anything about "houseplants for personal use" in the regulation of the USDA site..

If you know the botanical name of your plant, Rez, you could contact USDA and ask them, specifying it is meant as houseplant and for personal use..

I remember seeing that you are allowed to bring in personal houseplants, at least if you are moving home. I may have seen it on the border services website rather than USDA. I'll see if I can find it later unless someone else can find it before, puppy is waiting to go for a walk right now!

With proper clearance you can, but if it is just for one small plant, too much hassle, I think, so I never dare bring in any.
So many plants I really want to bring in from the Phil, but just thinking about paperworks is too time consuming for me. I just want to breeze through customs as fast as I can do it, especially after a long haul flight.

Rez, thanks for asking the question whether you can bring live plants to the US. The responses and information that is listed above will help me in finding phone numbers to call when I go on vacation next year to Alaska. This will help me in my research as to how much it would be for the cost of a sanitary certificate etc. to send plants cross country to New York City. Doubt that I will come across a nursery or greenhouse that will send the plants ahead of me. I am sure that I will want a special orchid or begonia.

In case you're wondering, here is the response I got from USDA:

If you bring back 12 or fewer articles of admissible plants that have no special restrictions, you do not need a permit. However, you do need a phytosanitary certificate from the country of origin.

For help in determining admissibility, refer to the Plant Protection and Quarantine Plants for Planting Manual's reference section. Click on “Plants for Planting Manual” and then find the list of Regulated Propagative Material. Plants that are not listed in this section are generally admissible. Check for entries at the family, genus and species levels.


Although does not mention from what entity to obtain the certificate exactly.
