Gita, did you grow the 'Siam Queen' type of Thai basil, with those huge heads of blooms? (They bloom more like sedum or achillea, not the spikes of little blooms that most basils do.)

No,Jill---
ALL my Basil seeds are continuation oft he basil Seeds Igot from you some years ago. But--I have only grown the Genovese and the Thai.
Haven't touched the Lemon/Lime ones.
Likei said--I do not use basil in cooking. Nothing against it--it is just that in dishes I cook--basil is not asked for.
Now--DILL!!!That is another whole story...
Also--I cannot cook without Onion Powder.... Gita

Well, I've grown and saved seeds from Thai 'Siam Queen' many times -- if the blooms are in heads / clusters rather than is spikes (like Salvia or like other basils), then that's what you have. Smiling Otherwise it might be another Thai type, like Cinnamon basil.

I grow a lot of basil varieties for their scent and as attractive "fillers" in the garden... only use a few for cooking.

Mine grow on long stems (spikes?) with the tiny seed clusters up the stem.
Very much like "Lady-in-red" Salvia's.
I have two pots still outside--doing very well--full of leaves to pick off.
The bloom-stalks are now gone.

I don't use them in cooking either--just for seeds to share.

OK... I've grown a number of thai-type basils, so not sure which one you have... could even be a cross-pollinated descendant of 'Siam Queen' with a different bloom form.

I love my Tulsi (sp) aka Holy Basil...it's the variety with the sweet scented leaves....it also makes for extremely yummy infused honey.

OK, I'll bite... what do you do with basil-infused honey?

I think Holy basil is the one tantefrancine uses with fish and other dishes.

I transplanted two Italian basil plants into smaller pots so that I could bring them inside every evening. Now I have collected a few dozen seeds, so I feel I can leave the pots outside for the remaining seeds to mature. I will give them some protection if low temperatures are in the forecast. Donner, you'll be starting your own plants next year! My favorite bonus of growing from seed is taking those delicious tender leaves from the first pinching-back of the seedlings and adding them to dinner...

Lisa kindly gave me a white snakeroot plant (Eupatorium rugosum), and I snipped a bunch of fluffy seedheads from it yesterday... then did the same with my Ironweed (brightest purple blooms) and New England Aster 'Blue Dome'. I also got some "Hot & Spicy" basil seeds, but there are soooo many still almost-but-not-quite ripe on those plants... I hope the killing freeze holds off a while longer!

Did anybody have luck with that sedum mix I shared last year? Those seeds are dust-like, so I just crumbled the tops and crossed my fingers that there were seeds in there somewhere. I can get a bunch again if there's interest, or I can just try to stick a bunch of cuttings (thinking I could overwinter quite a few on a shelf or windowsill).

Honestly Jill I've put it over ice cream and used in tea.... I haven't made it in forever - now I'm wishing that I had… That'll be on the to do list for next year.

I grew good large leaf basil next to smaller leafed ones, I suppose they will have hybridized some? I'm not sure if my saved seed is worth a chance.

I have about 50 moonflowers seeds. The vine Ipomoea.
Plant it and they will come.

Sally--
After seeing your big vine of "Moon Flower"-I am sure you will be getting a load of seeds. Have any of the pos popped open yet?
I am, patiently waiting, for all the seed pods (on mine) to harden off--dry, and be ready to pick. This is my first year growing these.

So what's the chance of overwintering a moon vine indoors? Silly me...I bought the way clearanced down ones at the very end of the season...and ummm they're still in their lil pots Whistling Would they keep growing if I brought them inside (if tonight's temps don't kill them)? If it won't work - I'd love a few seeds...my begging is pitiful isn't it? Rolling on the floor laughing

I've never seen moonflower sold in pots anywhere! All you can do, I think, is keep it coolish, lightish, dryish, hope it sleeps... FWIW I have read that the roots can be stored over winter, so even if the plant poops out, keep the pot and try a 'reboot' in spring. I pulled the roots and wrapped one and stuck it in the box with other things.. the roots are sort of thick and woody and some very long that I cut off.

Can you send me a photo of the root-capsules of the Moon Vine, please...
Mine aew atill in their maroon/greenish mode.
I am afraid that if they freeze--they may be gonners. Get mushy...

Do you think I should cut them all off and let them finish drying someplace
indoors??? I don't want to lose them--but, since you have over 50 picked--
at least I know Where i could get a few to plant next spring.

Seems like moon flowers would be similar to growing Passion flower or Mandevilla indoors..
or are they totally different?

Here's a link on growing them indoors, since you have them already Chantell...

GIta I bet your pods survived this frost just fine, so leave them out longer. Or open one up and see if the seed feels hard shelled already. After marooney-green, mine turn yellow, then dry brown.
Plant it and they will come.
