Mona, yes I live close to him. Actually I am moving my daylilies out to his place since I've split with my fiancé and had to move. I have no room at my place so he said I could move my daylilies to his place. Me and my friend Kim (who hybridizes with me) help him out with all the weeding (they just love all the fertilizer), dividing, and potting up the daylilies. And boy does he have a lot of daylilies to divide. James and Fred ( I live about 40 miles from Fred) let me have pollen. They have been great to me. Fred has saved me years of mistakes. Hurray!

Ann, you are right about the shade cloth. But even with shade cloth, once it got really hot here I didn't set many pods. Most of my daylilies were new for me this year so I got a lot in late spring so they didn't bloom til later in season when it was hot. But the shade cloth did help a lot.

[quote="Betja"I wonder if we could have a thread where we list all the people who post here that are hybridizers? .....I would love to have this type of information available somewhere here, along with their website addresses if they have them. Juli, is there any chance of doing this, or is this information already available somewhere in ATP that I just don't know about?[/quote]

Betty, anyone can start a thread here. You are welcome to start one asking who are hybridizers. For instance, I hybridize, but have not named or introduced. So, when you start a thread about it, you might want to specify just what you mean by hybridize. Some people make crosses and sell the seed, never growing the plants themselves. I know of one lurker here who does that. Of the people who have posted to the list, Fred, Bobbie Brooks and now Ann are the only ones I am aware of that name and sell. Judy Davisson was a member on Cubits, but I don't think she has followed us here. I wish she would! Charmaine Rich was also on Cubits, but have not seen her post here. I have asked Dottie Warrell to join us, but she doesn't do much online but email. I have also asked Annette Rice - but I don't think she has joined. I would love to have more hybridizers join us!

You might ask about which member sell or hybridize. That would be a good thread to "star" so we could always locate it!

I am Hybridizing but have not named or introduced anything yet as just getting started so I would not want to be included in a list yet but later I would. I think it should be only of those currently introducing and registering their daylilies, That would include any seedlings purchased that they felt worthy as they are theirs once they bought them.

I have purchased seed from Ann and she sells some amazing crosses that I hope one day to see something from. Takes so long here. Any beauties and good plants I would either test elsewhere or use as bridge plants onto hardy northern plants.

You ask why Gaskin seedlings go for so much. Because the Gaskins have a keen eye for what will become an awesome plant worthy of registration and envied by many. Take a look on the AHS under Gaskins and see what comes up. WOW. People in the business have come to trust and repect the knowledge that has been put into those crosses.

I will jump in here as to maybe why theirs go for so much. I think because they are creating and selling so many double edge daylilies. And by selling the seedlings, they are allowing other people to "buy" their genes (seedlings) and either use them in hybridizing or name them and introduce them themselves. I think most people who buy daylilies have family members they would like to have a lily named for them. I know that was the main reason I bought her seedlings. But I must admit at times I am astounded by how much some peopke pay for them. Also I must admit that Mary's pictures are of a professional quality presenting them well to a buying public.

Excellent point Dot. They do all look so good in the Pics and it is nice to be able to see all the points of a bloom clearly which helps in selection. I agree a lot are purchased for the genes to use in others programs. I have never won a bid myself as they always go beyond my budget but I have sure looked hard.

If the Tal of Gascone seedling I was bidding on doesn't go too high and Gardenfantasies wins it, we are actually going to split it. That way we don't keep bumping each other up; not that I was going any higher. It was nice of Chris to offer.

Personally, I am always totally in shock at the prices most Gaskins go for. I just can't see it worth that kinds of money. But then I don't hybridize and am only looking for pretty flowers for the garden.

I have seen the prices on some go real high but I would expect them to be really special for that kind of price even if I am using it in a breeding program. I don't have that kind of money. Wish I did and could have lots of lasd and lots of plants. Glad someone else can afford them though.

And I thought spending that much money on a registered lamb for breeding was high. On a flower? I learned the hard way that it is always your best ones that something freaky will happen to!

I believe it was back in 2007 they had one go up to $3500 and others have gone for over $1000. They do sell other seedlings as well not on the auction. I've heard they are just as nice as the ones on the auction. I'm sure they don't have the branching, bud count, etc as the ones on the LA though. They start at $10 and up.

Mona,

They sell them at their house during the bloom season. But I have seen them listed on their website, I think they were selling them in groups of 10. If you buy those though and they ship them, you don't get to choose what you want.

This is posted on their website.

September 21, 2011 Our garden will be open thru next May, at the same location. We are selling out most varieties and will move only a few lilies to our new home. WEB SITE WILL BE UPDATED BY DECEMBER 30. 2011. We will have about 100 of the best lilies introduced in the last five years for sale in the general listing and a few seedlings. We will have seedlings for sale at the garden and on the auction next bloom season. The land our garden is on has been obligated for sale, and the garden will be closed after the end of May. We try to give the lowest price and best plants possible, so we do not send gift plants. Our shipping starts in March. I will email everyone on our mailing list when the web site is updated. If you would like to be added to the mailing list, email me Mary and Phil Gaskins Gaskins Daylily Garden [email protected]

Mona, I know people have called them up or emailed them and told them what they are looking for such as large, dark eyed or red eyed, or what cross they may be looking for and they try to give you what you are looking for. I guess it just depends on what the cross is or how many fans there are as to the price.
