I want to make hills in my terrarium to plant plants in. Got any good ideas using things around the house?
The only thing I can come up with is to hollow out a log and fill it with soil to plant in.

Gather some pebbles and glue them together in the shapes you want, piles with hollows in them, or little valleys running through.

Use E60000 glue because it dries clear and is water resistant. Won't hurt the plants either.
Ya think??

I'm gonna have to see if that fancy glue is available up here.
I need to make hills that I can plant on without the soil and plants sliding off Rolling on the floor laughing no shortage of pebbles up here...

Use a little tumbler, build the pebbles around it, like you would build a well with stones. Cover the tumbler. Add tiny pebbles to the bottom of the tumbler, then fill with soil, plant!!

More pebbles beneath and around the tumbler would make it hill-ish. You could do several at various heights if you have a large enough aquarium. Tiered, sort of.

I can't think of anything else except clay and clay would have to be fired for permanency and to not mess with the soil.

Lee Anne,
How about using a screen with larger holes or a chicken wire with smaller holes? You can shape it however you want it, let it fill with soil but it will remain higher for your terrarium. The holes in the wire will allow the roots a place to travel through.

In my mind I can see this! Am I making sense? Big Grin

I like that Sharon!

You are Becky! and I just happen to have chicken wire left over from the pigeon coop. Window screen would work too!

The soon to be terrarium in question, can't find the one I want....this ia a really bad pic. but the aquarium is behind me:

You could use the chicken wire idea to make a back wall for that terrarium, too. I think that you could, anyway. If you wire-tie sticks here and there as a framework, tie or glue rocks as supports/pots for the plants..

Hit the yard sales, goodwill shops Becky. I'm presently using 5 and 10 gallon fish tanks...they're a dime a dozen.

Beautiful Lee Anne! I had a terrarium many years ago. This might be a nice December project! Hurray!
