Does anyone have experience with planting bulbs amidst an established bed of ivy? Good idea? Bad idea?

I have a large swath of English ivy in my front yard, and I have this idea that it would look beautiful with a few kinds of alliums popping up out of it in the spring/summer. However, the ivy bed is well-established, and I'm wondering whether the roots would smother the bulbs...

It will work. I have a side yard that is ivy and I plant bulbs in that area with no problem.
