I'm so happy for the Blyth's and wish them a very long and happy retirement.

Just remembered that one of the first 5 irises I ever ordered was a Blyth:

(1992) I remember finding it so unlike any of the others I had seen at the time and I just had to have it! Lovey dubby

Wow, what a beauty! I don't think you can go wrong with any Blyth iris, old or new. What did you add to your order Lilli? Green Grin!

If any of you in the US are adding on to your order please let me know if I can join your order. I have a few smalls that I really want, but it doesn't seem like enough for a big overseas purchase by themselves.

Another concern is that other of the top hybridizers are getting on in years like Keith Keppel and Joe Ghio. I know that I don't have the energy that they seem to have.

True Paul, there don't seem to be many young up and coming hybridizers. Or at least they haven't made their mark yet. But I am sure some will.

I think Barry was a master of colours. His "Neon Blue" is stunning and his "Who's Your Daddy" and "Honey Dripper" are favourites of mine. I bought "Popstar" this year because I love its unique colour.

In regard to young up and coming hybridizers, I am looking forward to seeing what Melissa and Bailey Schiller at Smokin Heights create. They are a mother and son team who have created some nice seedlings which I believe are being evaluated as potential future introductions.

One of their seedlings I like is Cinderella's Secret X Chasing Destiny

Unfortunately, the only way to view their seedlings is to go through the daily posts on their facebook site.

Most of the current great hybridizers will affect the future of irises long after they have quit making crosses I'm thinking.
Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

I agree Tom.

I was thinking about what the Blyths wrote in the email (posted above by Liz) about seeing their irises showing up in the pedigree of new introductions by other hybridizers. I imagine that must be very satisfying, knowing your legacy will be carried on like that.

Made me wonder if any of the non-Blyth irises that I have, does actually have 'Blyth genes' in their pedigree and I realised that my favorite iris does!

(Johnson 2005)

A cross between

(Blyth 1992)

and

(Ghio 1996)

So that is 3 great hybridizers just going back one generation - and I'm sure there are more, but I haven't looked into it yet, as both Imprimis and Romantic Evening have quite complicated family trees:

Imprimis:
((Inca Queen x (Tranquil Star x (Love Chant x Festive Skirt))) x Amber Snow) X ((Alpine Journey x Beachgirl) x ((Beachgirl x (Tranquil Star x Coral Strand)) x (Persian Smoke x Chimbolam)))

Romantic Evening:
88-14: ((83-73-J2: (Success Story x (Fancy Tales x Alpine Castle)) x ((Persian Smoke x Entourage) x ((Strawberry Sensation x (Artiste x Tupelo Honey)) x Borderline sibling))) x Costa Rica) X 88-215: (Witch's Wand x 86-3, Costa Rica sibling)

(But then, Romantic Evening has 197 registered child plants - so maybe 'complicated' is the way to go?? Blinking Blinking Blinking )

This year I had many new to me bloom. So many were outstanding.

To add to the coffee pics posted by others, I really enjoyed Coffee Whispers. I like the rounded form.

And I love this one, to no one's surprise I am sure:

And First Avenue really stands out in a garden. The color is even more vibrant in full sun.

I have 65 Blyths, and many on my want list.

I have to say that of earlier Blyths I love love love these two:
