I ignored everyone for a month (you and my orchids) and when I looked, I discovered all sorts of wonders. A couple of my orchids bloomed and faded before I noticed they had flowers. I hate it when that happens, especially if its one I haven't seen before.

Oh, well. There's always next year...

Blooming currently in the GH:

Laelia Hsinying Excell

Potinara Ah Hung Yoyo 'Little Goldfish'

Sophrocattleya Royal Beau 'Hihimanu"

Epidendrum floribundum "Miyao" x Epidendrum cordigrum
Thumb of 2017-01-02/DaisyI/75f2b5

Dendrobium Aussie Chip

Odontocidium 'Pacific Sunspots', who, for some reason, grew in a circle this year.

A NoID Cymbidium with pendulous flower stalks just starting to open
Thumb of 2017-01-02/DaisyI/0392bc

And one anticipation: Dendrobium speciosum "Moon Shadow" (compactum x speciosum)

Adding my name to the "thanking Joshua" list too. I did thank him in a tree mail, but he needs to get some recognition for his work.

Thanks all for the compliments. Credit must also go to everyone who shares photos and provides the names so that I can add them to the database, too.

Okay... Really?? I can't believe I am the first to post photos of these orchids. Sometimes it pays to get the plant with the name you've never heard of before. Smiling

It also looks like I need to update some names.

Thanks Josh!

Daisy, I run every one of my names through OrchidWiz before I post the picture. No mistakes that way but it takes forever.

You're welcome! To be honest, there are a large number of photos in the older threads that I have yet to index and add to the database. With the new year (and the new thread), I've tried to start adding each one as they get posted. As time permits I hope to work back through the older threads and add the photos to the database. The vast majority of hybrids aren't actually in the NGA database at present.

It sounds like you could spend the rest of your life at this task. But a good way to spend your time - it will never get you arrested.

And you will gain our eternal gratitude. How big is your house? We would all like to come over and thank you in person.

I'm hoping it won't take quite that long!

I appreciate the sentiment, but it's only a small unit and my wife and I do happen to live on the other side of the planet to most of you (Australia), so it might be a bit difficult to pay me a visit!

WOW, incredible shows there Ted, Jim and Daisy!!! I'm jealous...not much is happening in my yard right now.

However, I had to share THIS with all of you...it's in my neighbor's yard, I noticed it driving past a few days ago and was just in AWE. I HAD to walk over and take a bunch of photo's. (I couldn't find a tag in the pot) Sorry if it's too many pics, I couldn't help myself! nodding

A little fyi---the tree (which I think was a grapefruit, but is definitely some citrus) fell about 3 or 4 years ago. It's in the middle of the lawn and gets LOTS of direct sun. The lady who lives there is in her very late 80's or early to mid 90's and is NEVER out in her yard anymore...so I don't think this orchid has had a bit of attention in years!

Josh, that's the point. I haven't been to Australia.

Patty, I would be over there in the middle of the night dragging that dead tree home.

Rolling on the floor laughing Oh Daisy, I would LOVE to, and have seriously considered it...but I can see her yard from mine...Mrs. Turnbull is directly behind me and over one house (in the second picture my yard is what you see in the background between the two fences!)...I think she'd be able to find it too easily, and I don't think I want to spend any time in jail over an orchid burglary!

Isn't it gorgeous though? I just couldn't get over the SIZE of the blooms, and the buds, and the roots all over that stump!

I swear I'm gonna throw all my orchids into the yard and stop fertilizing them or babying them with fungicides and every other thing I spray them with.... Whistling

Well, in that case, Daisy, let me know when you're in Melbourne!

Patty - perhaps you could ask your neighbour if she's happy for you to take it? She might be amenable to someone else caring for it... and cleaning up her yard in the process (if you get rid of the tree for her).

I have to add my WOW Patty, that orchid in your neighbor's yard is a amazing. What if you printed out one of your photos and gave it to her? Maybe she would share how it got there and maybe even share the plant. Shrug! Crossing Fingers!

Gosh, that's impressive! ....and so ironic that we all spend hours and lots of dollars trying to coax our plants to bloom and stay healthy... Rolling on the floor laughing
I've got a new one to share today.

Wow, both you and Daisy have the C. Royal Beau 'Himimanu' in bloom now. It's a lovely color combo and sure seems to keep itself on a schedule no matter where it's growing.

The thrips are attracted to yellow, but the damage shows up on the dark colors the most. Have you tried a spinosad spray on them?

No Elaine, I havent tried anything for the thrips...this is the first real problem I've seen with them and I honestly thought the anoles were taking care of all my bug problems . I've got a mess of anoles, and either I have more thrips or the anoles arent that interested in them. It has just started raining here and I think it has been at least 4 months since I've heard that sound...music to my ears!
