Butterflies I was one of the first 300 contributors to the plant database! Daylilies Hummingbirder Ponds
Yesterday in the favorite red daylily thread, I said I would post some photos of my first year red seedlings. I realize some people don't like big edges and others do, so I hope everyone can find something to enjoy.

I had four seedlings from BORN TO RUN X LARRY'S OBSESSION

BTR X LO #1
Thumb of 2011-11-09/farmerbell/627d41

BTR X LO #2
Thumb of 2011-11-09/farmerbell/9a8383

BTR X LO #3
Thumb of 2011-11-09/farmerbell/325efd

BTR X LO #4
Thumb of 2011-11-09/farmerbell/6a3fb3

I had several seedlings from BORN TO RUN X TALLADEGA.

BTR X TAL # 1 AND #2
Thumb of 2011-11-09/farmerbell/693526

BTR X TAL #4
Thumb of 2011-11-09/farmerbell/ff3b26

BTR X TAL # 5 AND #6
Thumb of 2011-11-09/farmerbell/2bdab6

This seedling has unknown parentage. I planted some seeds I had culled because I just couldn't stand to throw them out and several germinated. This is one of those babies. It has a monster bloom with nice wide petals.

I'm an Iris person but love all flowers and always look at the daylily pictures. If I were younger I might get involved. I admit that I did not like the heavy edges but they are growing on me. Wonderful seedlings.

Hi Ann, I'm going to say those are absolutely WONDERFUL!!! I guess the 2nd one is my favorite. Now, if you'll email me your address, I'll be seeing you very late one night. I hope you have these well markded so I will get the right ones on the first midnight raid. Of course, you could always just mail them to me!!!

I think I've seen that you are a zone 6. Are these just one year old and blooming this great?? If so, are they in a GH or do you grow outside? I just can't seem to get my babies to grow this fast. What's your magic ingredient?

Blessings, Mona

Nice seedlings Farmerbell!
I hybridize for reds and to me the trick to getting a good red is to reduce the throat as much as possible

Lyle, of course you know I absolutely love your red seedlings! And I'm seeing a few with teeth there, too -- Big Grin I'm really taken with DRY HEAT and the one next to it. Are they pure red, or more on the rose red side? And I'm discovering that I really like watermarks too! I see what you mean be reducing the throat -- it makes it so much more dramatic, and that's a great observation. Hope I can remember it!

Thanks, everyone for your comments. All of the seedlings out of BORN TO RUN X LARRY'S OBSESSION were quite nice and all rebloomed. The number 2 seedling has that amazing edge which is not flat like a pie crust, but more bubbly, like popcorn, Amazingly it would rarely hang, but the edge was so heavy that the bloom didn't always open flat. I am anxious to see how they all perform next year. I think my favorite of this cross is the number 4 seedling. I love the contrast between the dark red and the really white edge. I love daylilies that have more than one color - guess I like the contrast. I broke my ankle pretty badly this fall and wasn't able to be in the garden for almost nine weeks. This week was ths first time since early Sept, that I have been out there and that was with a walker. Consequently seedlings that I wanted to move didn't get moved and seedlings thst should have been composted are still growing. I guess they will all get a second chance next year.

Mona, this was their first year to bloom. It takes about a year and a half to get bloom for me. I usually plant in January and will have bloom in June the following year. Wish I could get bloom in nine or ten months!

Lyle, you have some nice intense red seedlings.

Lyle they are all wonderful but my Fav, are in photo sequence 1-3-5-6-2-7-8-9-10-4-11. I absolutely love green throats with the red even if they are larger, and I also love the watermarks for contrast. You both have a great selection.
