Are we close with Oligoneuron rigidum var. rigidum? Maybe not quite there but close!

http://www.wildflower.org/gall...

That photo doesn't look like it belongs with that species!

http://www.wildflower.org/gall...

Oligoneuron houghtonii maybe?

I think the flowers on yours are closing?

Hi Janet! Thank you for your assistance.
There sure does seem to be several species of plants in the wildflower.org gallery! Blinking
the plant reminds me of goldenrod too but actually when I first saw it I thought maybe it was a milkweed, the way the leaves looked, coming up the stem alternately. I do have several varieties of goldenrod growing here.

I just went and tried to get a closer picture for you of the flower but as you see they are just about spent! I wish I could get closer---macro envy setting in again!! LOL! the little tiny flowers each has five petals and each petal curls under --- you know like when you take the edge of scissors over ribbon? -- like that.

Here I'm holding the flowers between two fingers:

Thanks Christine, I can see the petals better now.

Asclepias tuberosa is close, maybe a subspecies of it..

Asclepias tuberosa Hello Yellow .. maybe an escapee as it's been 'tweaked'?

A long list of Asclepias species!

Drawings at the bottom, and a photo of the original A. tuberosa which still looks to have slightly broader petals and not as many.

You will know better if the flowers match..

Not a milkweed and not a goldenrod. I'll look around and see if I can find it. Looks like Asteraceae family to me.

I thought Asteracea family too Linda, but they can be confusing! I hope you can find it. Maybe Solidago? That is Goldenrod though. Whistling

I had a 'quick' google of all the genera listed on the last link apart from some obvious ones, closest I found is Gymnosperma glutinosum but the leaves look smaller and flower heads bigger, unless this is a young plant.

I'm rethinking goldenrod. This is the season for it and I found one in my yard that still has flowers...maybe! There's quite a few kinds.

I thought asclepias, too. The foliage looks dead on. Are leaves opposite or alternate?

Well, Euthamia looks close to me. Not goldenrod, but very similar...look at the details on the flowers. It's like clusters of little flowers in a single flowerhead. I haven't seen that genus around here.

thanks you all are so close!!! the plant is much like the Euthamia except the plant seems to grow from a single leaved stem and the flowers from the top of the single stem, unless they are not fully grown plants. Unfortunately I didn't get a closer pick in full bloom because the flower petals were curled back even then-like tiny cups with curled back petals, sepals coming from the centers. I'll get some more current pics of the whole plant and leaves.

Again, thank you-- hopefully we can get this one in the plant files!! Big Grin

I think yours is a young plant Christine, look at the flowers from above in this photo..

http://www.illinoiswildflowers...

I would like to see more photos though, a side view as well.

The description..

This native perennial plant is 1½–3' tall, branching frequently in the upper half to create a bushy effect. The narrow stems are hairless. The alternate leaves are up to 3½" long and less than ¼" across. They are linear, hairless, and have smooth edges. There is usually only a single prominent vein, although some of the larger leaves may have 2 additional side veins that are visible. The upper stems terminate in clusters of small composite flowers. While in the bud stage, each cluster typically has 3-7 sessile flowerheads. Some of the flowerheads eventually develop short pedicels and partially separate from each other. Each flowerhead is only 1/8" across while in bloom, and variable in length, depending on its maturity. There are about 5 yellow disk florets and 12 yellow ray florets in each flowerhead. Beneath these florets, is a short cylinder of narrow bracts. These bracts are often resinous and shiny, and can vary in color from green to pale yellow. The blooming period occurs from late summer to fall, and lasts about 2 months. A typical plant blooms gradually over a long period of time. A floral scent may, or may not, be noticeable. The florets are replaced by bullet-shaped achenes with small tufts of white hair, which are dispersed by the wind. Small brown pieces of the dried-up florets often persist within these tufts of hair. The root system is fibrous and produces long rhizomes, forming vegetative colonies readily.

Does this fit? The photos in the links are probably groups if plants.

Okay Janet, I think you're right!! That all sounds very similar!!! And, upon closer inspection (moved the grass away) there is only one woody stem!!

*Blush* Do you think I missed my calling, maybe I should have been a detective but this is more fun. Big Grin

When I get time I might try your other plant again Christine, I need to get some of my photos up to date so I can burn them before I set up my new computer or I will have lots of unnamed photos from previous burnings. I tend to do the things I like doing most first though! Hilarious!
