I have tried winter aconites a couple of times. Thought they should do well here. One survived for a year or so then disappeared. I am so anxious to see how the bulbs that I dug up all summer then replanted (only the larger ones) will do. The beds are well marked.

Orange Sunset, I think that's the name -they're no longer offering it and I couldn't confirm. (just edited to change from Orange Sun to Orange Sunset- I found where I'd entered a photo of it last year in the database.

Thanks William!

I found something fun and interesting! Van Sion is the old double daffodil frequently seen naturalized along roadsides and old home sites around here. They're not particularly pretty by today's standards of double daffodils- kinda messy looking, like it exploded Hilarious! This photo is how they typically look.

Old House Gardens sells them, and described an interesting habit of Van Sion. Newly planted bulbs from a professional source will exhibit different bloom form, a defined corolla and cup, with the cup filled with petals. They go on to say that after a year or 2 in the garden they will flower with the typical double form.

A couple of years ago I divided a clump and gave them a new home in rich soil with some bone meal. 2 blooms are opening now and have the defined corolla and cup! After reading that it was possible I've really wanted to see for myself, so I'm pretty excited! When they open further I'll post photos Big Grin

Neal I will be thrilled to see a defined corolla and cup on these. I.. think they are ugly. My precious neighbor gave me some calling them Scrambled Eggs. They looked exactly like the database photo above. I surreptitiously started removing them from my gardens. They never would open up completely. When I see them in her yard I go ugh.
It's an interesting read on the history though!
Love your Itzam, they look like (edited to say Jack Snipe not Jetfire) that I haven't been successful at growing yet.

Guess I am odd but I like them - the doubles. Am looking forward to some that have survived that I purchased from Old House Gardens a few years ago. They are actually multiplying. Yeah. Can't remember the name. Oh, I looked them up. Irene Copeland and Mary Copeland.

Neal, I'm big fan of double daffodils! I love the look on Narcissus TP! For me the weirder the look, the better!

Kabby, sometimes I see blooms that never fully open here, mostly in crowded clumps.

I'm more a fan of doubles with tidy form, but I do find them interesting enough to keep a few in the garden.

Another relatively new one that is becoming a favorite, Winter Waltz.

Wisley is another I'm really liking. The petals turn white with maturity.

Mary and Annette, I love doubles too, just not this particular one. And Neal's looks much better than what I'm used to with this particular cultivar. His is actually quite pretty.

Does anyone grow Erlicheer and Cheerfulness both? I have a couple of blooms from a double mix and it's not quite as intoxicating as I would have thought. I don't know even if the bloom is one of these but it kinda has that paperwhite scent. Not full on but it's detectable.

Kabby, I grow both Erlicheer and Cheerfulness, Erlicheer has larger individual blooms (about the size of a 50 cent piece) and usually blooms a little earlier than Cheerfulness. Both are fragrant.

Its fascinating to me how much culture can effect the bloom form of Van Sion. The naturalized clumps around here typcially show a lot of green in the blooms and often aren't very showy. I've noticed in the past that when grown in the garden they are more yellow and a bit more refined looking.

Beautiful blooms Neal and J!

Winter Waltz and Wisley look very similar to me, except the cup and reflexed perianth on WW looks a little smaller.

Annette, they're both from the Cyclamineus class, which have those reflexed petals I love so much. Wisley is somewhat larger than Winter Waltz, and has a more ruffled and flaring cup. Both change color with maturity, the cups of WW age to a buff/peach color, while the petals of Wisley change from yellow to bright white.

I really enjoy those that change color, it makes it fun to observe them each day Smiling

Thanks for letting me know Neal!

I'll have to start getting smaller batches of different varieties of the daffodils. I've previously ordered 100 at a time, and when I bought Ice King, I got 200. Blinking

Neal, I must say thanks again, N. Pink Charm is starting to bloom. Smiling

I finally decided (seriously this time) to stop ordering Spring bulbs and I topped out at 129 - hmmmmmmm and I thought I would stop at 25 D'Oh! D'Oh! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Since they will be coming before I can plant them the end of April, can anyone tell me if I should just keep them in the fridge or if I should put them in gallon pots with potting soil to hold them and plant as soon as I can? Loving all the Southern blooms! Hurray! Hurray!
