JamesAcclaims said:Hey, all! Thanks so much for all of your assistance and input. We are securely and fully moved in. Granted, we didn't have much time once we got orders, but we did find a place that we like. It actually had a lot of bad reviews, but all seemed to be about a bad management team, which is no longer in place. We have not had any issues, and we are as happy as can be. My part-sun plants and air plants are right at home on our very large balcony, which overlooks the river. My full sun plants are getting supplemented by a grow light, and I think they will do just fine. We'll be here about 7-8 months, and we are going to enjoy it while we're here. Hopefully sometime in late May we'll find out if we are staying in Jax or heading out of town at the end of the 8 months.

Lots of happiness in your new digs and city. I just LOVE adventures! happy exploring looks lovely and peaceful.

Thanks, Rosie! Its definitely peaceful. Sometimes I feel like I'm being too loud. I don't wanna be THAT neighbor Hilarious! . It seems pretty laid back though. And I have yet to hear any of the neighbors, so I think the old construction is pretty durable and sound dampening Thumbs up

Rolling on the floor laughing I surely hope not.

There are some other navy here, a few younger adults, but yeah, mostly retirees. A lot of these seem you be owned and used for vacation getaways. One of our neighbors even pointed out some units that she knows for sure are furnished and owned, but that she's never really seen anyone at Hurray!

Actually, that is why I said that..we looked at quite a few in Florida and the scenery and layout looked familiar. I bet the construction / builders were very busy east and west coast... We were looking to buy..(got an RV instead) ... but could not wrap head around having just one place to getaway to.. and even tho we are retiree age.. do not feel retired in the brain. Someday 😊

Many years ago my parents lived on a boat at a marina on the St. John's River not far from NAS, Jacksonville. The neighborhoods around Roosevelt Square at that time were mostly young people but all of Florida has aged; there are lots of seniors here now and I'm one of them. Green Grin!

Oh cool James! Welcome to Florida! Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! You got a nice apartment right there on the end of the canal with that beautiful view of the wide open river. Very NICE! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!
You will end up adoring that covered porch. One can only take just so much sun and in FL we have almost daily rain showers that come out of nowhere & leave as quickly as they come.

I just got back from the JAX area and, compared to here, they have very few biting bugs, even near the rivers.

We moved to Florida on the 28th of March, and I have been out on that balcony quite a bit. I have yet to see a mosquito in Florida. I know I haven't been here that long, but mosquitoes are a PLAGUE in Corpus. I actually just said something to my mom about it the other day, because even while walking the dog, I have yet to see a mosquito. Mid-day, early evening, dusk? Never. Shrug!

Speaking of the rivers here. The St. Johns seems as if it's fed from the Atlantic? It seems like it is only "fed" by the ocean. Or does it have some source that pushes it both out to ocean and down our way? Even if it isn't fed that way and for some reason it's a magical river that flows north, then it would still be a slightly brackish salt-water mix in the "lower" river basin (in the North end of the river, in this magic backwards river scenario). Can mosquitoes live in salt water? I would think it would make the larvae dry out.

Oh my gosh! It IS a magic Northward flowing river!

"The St. Johns is the longest river in Florida - 310 miles long. It is one of the few rivers in the United States that flows north. The source of the river, or headwaters, is a large marshy area in Indian River County that flows north and turns eastward at Jacksonville to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean."

"The total drop of the river from its source in swamps south of Melbourne to its mouth in the Atlantic near Jacksonville is less than 30 feet, or about one inch per mile, making it one of the "laziest" rivers in the world."

The St. Johns is the longest river in Florida - 310 miles long. It is one of the few rivers in the United States that flows north.
The land area that drains into a water body is called a drainage basin - also called a watershed The St. Johns is divided into three drainage basins.
Because the river flows north, the upper basin is the area to the south that forms its marshy headwaters. The middle basin is the area in central Florida where the river widens forming lakes Harney, Jesup. Monroe and George. The lower basin is the area in Northeast Florida from Putnam County to the river's mouth in Duval County.
The source of the river, or headwaters, is a large marshy area in Indian River County It flows north and turns eastward at Jacksonville to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean
The width of the river varies. It is a broad marsh at its headwaters and averages more than two miles in width between Palatka and Jacksonville. It widens to form large lakes in central Florida.
The total drop of the river from its source in swamps south of Melbourne to its mouth in the Atlantic near Jacksonville is less than 30 feet, or about one inch per mile, making it one of the "laziest" rivers in the world.
Because the river flows slowly, it is difficult to flush pollutants.
Major pollution sources include discharges from wastewater treatment plants and runoff from urban and agricultural areas after it rains. This runoff carries pesticides and other pollutants into streams that lead to the river. Pollution is concentrated around urban areas.
Saltwater enters the river at its mouth in Jacksonville. In periods of low water, tides may cause a reverse flow as far south as Lake Monroe - 161 miles upstream from the rivers mouth.
Major tributaries, or smaller streams and rivers that flow into the St. Johns River include the Wekiva River, Econlockhatchee River and the Ocklawaha River.
The St. Johns basin is actually an ancient intracoastal lagoon system. As sea levels dropped barrier islands became an obstacle that prevented water from flowing east to the ocean. Instead, the water collected in the flat valley and slowly meandered northward for about 300 miles. This formed the St. Johns River.

Wow, that's basically no change for that amount of distance. As for my original "is it brackish question", I wonder how often the tides are higher than the water levels and push the water back towards the south a ways?
