I'm flattered by your endorsement, Stush, TY, but as mystified as anyone else about the flowering of Sans. I can't think of anything else related to plants that has so many conflicting anecdotes. The only constant in their stories is that none of the plants that bloomed were very young pups.
I believe that, like any other plant, they bloom when mature enough to do so, and cultural conditions don't prevent it. I believe with all of my heart that it's NOT caused by being pot/root bound, a condition that often coincides with maturity. Why the credit always goes to potbound instead of maturity is confounding to me. I also believe that Sans flower more often than people think. Not everyone can smell the flowers, and you have to be looking fairly often to notice the bloom stalk, and they don't last long or usually stick up higher than the leaves.
I've read that once a rosette blooms once, it won't bloom again, just make more pups. Wish I was organized enough to test such a theory, or that it was published on a site I trust. (Links to reputable sources welcome!) My plants get shuffled around, repotted, rosettes separated often.
When plants lived in much darker conditions when I lived in OH, I only ever saw 1 bloom on Sans (in about 10 years.) Since moving to AL 7 years ago, I've seen 3 Sans blooms at diff times of year. I think they need more light to do it more quickly, as an unsupported opinion/observance. The clump of plants I was given was already 50-60 years old. So many Sans are stuck in dark corners out there, which logically, would make their growth/maturity happen more slowly.
All I know for sure is that when such a gift appears, it's always a thrill! I think I'll always get very excited when a plant of mine blooms, or whenever someone posts about it on the 'net.
