Can't even send any kind of food into the US from here without a permit. I wonder if you can carry them bare root into the US?

It would be a toss up and you'd probably spend a long time in customs while they made up their mind.

aocain,
Your plant is a Sansevieria trifasciata Laurentii. Who knows why they bloom. Mine bloomed about every other year and in winter while in the house. Out of a whole bunch, maybe one flower stock. I would have to say the right conditions for them to bloom. And I don't know what they are. Perhaps purpleinopp = Tiffany can help you out here. She grows hers out side in the ground and has a great deal of success.

I'm flattered by your endorsement, Stush, TY, but as mystified as anyone else about the flowering of Sans. I can't think of anything else related to plants that has so many conflicting anecdotes. The only constant in their stories is that none of the plants that bloomed were very young pups.

I believe that, like any other plant, they bloom when mature enough to do so, and cultural conditions don't prevent it. I believe with all of my heart that it's NOT caused by being pot/root bound, a condition that often coincides with maturity. Why the credit always goes to potbound instead of maturity is confounding to me. I also believe that Sans flower more often than people think. Not everyone can smell the flowers, and you have to be looking fairly often to notice the bloom stalk, and they don't last long or usually stick up higher than the leaves.

I've read that once a rosette blooms once, it won't bloom again, just make more pups. Wish I was organized enough to test such a theory, or that it was published on a site I trust. (Links to reputable sources welcome!) My plants get shuffled around, repotted, rosettes separated often.

When plants lived in much darker conditions when I lived in OH, I only ever saw 1 bloom on Sans (in about 10 years.) Since moving to AL 7 years ago, I've seen 3 Sans blooms at diff times of year. I think they need more light to do it more quickly, as an unsupported opinion/observance. The clump of plants I was given was already 50-60 years old. So many Sans are stuck in dark corners out there, which logically, would make their growth/maturity happen more slowly.

All I know for sure is that when such a gift appears, it's always a thrill! I think I'll always get very excited when a plant of mine blooms, or whenever someone posts about it on the 'net.

Tiffany,
About the rosette not growing any more. Most rosette has only a number of leaves it can produce. Unlike the hahnii group, which and produce many leaves and form 'stacking' most trifascitia can only produce 5. And most of the other species much less. Like the 'Bats' producing one at maturity. And all those in the guineensis family has only 3 leaves. I love the masonianas but being with guineensis has only 3 leaves. Here's a link to a free copy of 'The Splendid Sansevieria' by Chahinian B.J.

Spitz,
Lucky you. I guess I would have all those if I could plant them outside year round. Too bad for the big storms that plague your paridise. Seems you could never have it all. We get the big snow storms and cold weather, Florida gets the big storms also, Calif. gets heat and drought. So on and so on.

After reading this thread I decided to give Sans a try! Stush, do you know what kind of Sans these guys are?

So here they are, my first Sans ever. The nursery I go to had a couple little baby ones, so I decided to start small and watch them grow!

My Sanseviera patula has grown nicely this summer:

Have been watching how it will develop its new growth

Photo this August 2014:
So good to compare photos, new growth continued upright getting taller.., I wonder when it will decide to be more fan-like..or is it just following the direction of the sun causing it to grow upright. I also notice it is making some pokey tips..reminds me of the tips of agave leaves.

Stush, I could not resist this one it is so dark it is almost black with just enough yellow on the edge to f make the dark color really pop.

It has a leaf that looks like it is sporting to stripe.
