Just found this thread and what a bunch of creative people we have here. My grandmother often used the phrase "Idle hands are the devil's workshop" so I was taught at an early age to knit, crochet and embroider. Later I learned tatting and of course sewing. My mother was a gifted seamstress but none of it seemed to rub off on me. I can sew, but it isn't my favorite. I was spoiled by mother's gifted hands and didn't realize how lucky I was until I had to buy "store bought" clothes! I like to cook and bake, however, after over 60 years of it, I am not so anxious to tackle complicated recipes any more.
Several years ago I saw a shell Christmas tree and thought I might purchase it until I saw the price tag, and almost fainted. I decided I had a lot of shells just lying around so I made one myself. Same with the Christmas "presents."
Because we have a large family, I make all the birthday, anniversary, first communion, confirmation, etc. cards. Both DH and I are avid photographers and with years of photos, I can always find a suitable one, however, I cheat on most of the verses and plagiarize (don't tell anyone).
This year I have been really into my latest hobby which my DIL introduced me to at age 79, which is beading. I will have to confess that the first time she took me to her beading society I was absolutely frightened almost to copping out and not going. I couldn't even see to thread a needle, and those tiny beads, with the tiny holes -- horrors. But after going I am so glad I took the step. Just remember, you're never too old to learn. I no longer have to worry about what to do about gifts for the female members of our family! I have been stitching up a storm for our upcoming 60th wedding anniversary where I will distribute some of my "wares."
