Thanks for your advice, John! I've got two 'Shasta' viburnums, so it sounds like I need to find another variety of V. plic. tomentosum... and a companion for my blackhaw viburnum, if I want fruit on it (and I do!).

I'll hold out for a V. x juddii (or two?) for that amazing scent, too.

Would V. x juddii cross-pollinate with a "straight" Korean Spice V. carlesii?

Just looked up V. x burkwoodii and see it's a V carlesii cross also...

So, maybe V. x juddii + V. x burkwoodii + V. carlesii = enough cross-pollination for fruiting?

LOL I remember @Sequoiadendron trying to match up the cross pollination thing for his Viburnums. What ever version one gets the bloom times of the cross pollinators must match!

I THINK the most fragrant is the Korean Spice, Viburnum carlesii 'Compactum'. When in bud, the color is light pink orangey, whereas the one that Chantell has and also I have is darker pink, also blooms earlier: the Mohawk.

I also THINK I have Viburnum × carlcephalum 'Cayuga'. They all used to have names around the trunk, but they disappeared. I bought them in Fall of 2009. I can show you the flowers and their leaves on my iPhone, I just do not know how to upload. I only got the pictures from my old iPhone.

Jill, who else is going to order? The one I want is not available. And I do not have the space to buy some more. I have 5 already. We can order for Fall maybe? Talk about it in May.

Those who have mentioned plants of similar parentage are correct: as long as their bloom times overlap, they can/will cross-pollinate. Judd Viburnum, Burkwood Viburnum, and most Koreanspice Viburnum will overlap and cross-pollinate.

As for answering a question about what a plant looks like and its relative foliage coloration...post some images! There are more than a couple Viburnum species that have snowball style flowers - V. plicatum f. plicatum, V. opulus, V. macrocephalum 'Sterile' - so comparing foliage darkness or lightness is not sufficient to answer a question about what species it might be.

Show the whole plant, and then progressively more detail of leaves, stems, branches, trunk, buds, flowers, etc. to fully present what an unknown plant is. Digital images are essentially free, the full record is beneficial to you if you save any of this kind of information, and you can post images here interminably for all observers to learn from and benefit perpetually.

Why do less? Ever?

Late to my own party...sorry all. @ViburnumValley THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Hurray! I was actually going to send a treemail your way and ask...but life distracted me <whew> just getting back over 'here.' Now I've gotta check my plant list to ensure I have the correct one listed. I'm sure y'all have already figured out...the scent (at least on mine) is to die for...heady, spicy, wafting...what more could you ask for? For the original DOGers I got that plant from Rick's Custom Nursery...I miss them!!! Looks like my notes did say Koreanspice or Mohawk. All I remember is Debbie saying that I would LOVE the scent...and she was right!!!

Francine, sorry, could have sworn I posted a reply to you earlier...

I'm fine with ordering now, fall, next year... LMK when the one you want is back in stock, and I'll take a look at his current offerings at that time.

Meanwhile, I'll keep my eye out for the ones I want when nursery-stomping

ViburnumValley said:V. bitchiuensis crossed with V. carlesii is the hybrid V. x juddii - with much more heat tolerance, cleaner foliage, and compact denser habit. Flowers are slightly less full/solid than other selections.

John - do you have a link for this one or did I miss this one in Francine's post?

I came across V juddii in the "best viburnums for american gardens" article, but it's not on the list from Francine's supplier... he may have it another year/season.

Critter, if you're still contemplating a "friend" for Shasta, Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Mariesii' is widely available. I bought 'Shasta' so that 'Mariesii' would produce berries. I'll find out this year if it worked!

Sooooo did anyone end up purchasing any? I'd love to know what you ended up with and your thoughts/feedback. Missing mine since moving and will be looking to plant at least one.

Didn't order from the mail order place, but found several all the same! I have to see if any tags survived, as I've been super bad about putting in real labels the last 5 years. I know the one that just started blooming is a V. carleisii, not sure of cultivar. I've got older Snowball and Snowflake viburnums, one that I'm pretty sure is Shasta but hasn't started blooming yet, I think there's a burkwoodii out there, not sure of the 3rd in that area, and I rounded it all off with 3 'Blueberry Muffin' babies that I got at deep discount. The V. carleisii does have wonderful fragrance!

I'll take my camera out for photos...
