Rolling on the floor laughing @Garden10 I WISH Christine was my neighbor!!! As it is, we're about 5 hours apart (or more like 6 or 7 the way I drive. The kids used to say, "Mom, you're NOT in a school zone here!). Yes, Texas really is that big. You can drive all day and still be in the state.

But that's what's so great about this forum: gardeners helping gardeners. The nice folks who post on here are a wealth of information, and I've learned a lot.

Gramma, look at this:

Thumb of 2017-04-09/Garden10/8ebf13

He's crying, Gramma. CRYING. Why? Because he can't get at the seed in the Squirrel Buster Mini Birdfeeder. It has a spring mechanism, if something as heavy as a squirrel perches on it, the doors close and they can't get at the seed. The only way it wouldn't work is if the person who put it outside was too stupid to put it together correctly, so...excuse me for a minute...

I hate to be a party pooper, but be really careful with the 'squirrel buster' feeders if they're the style that require a bird has to lean their head in to get food. If a squirrel jumps on the feeder while a bird is feeding, it... well, the birds don't fare well if they don't take flight fast enough. I was considering that style of feeder several years ago until I read the Amazon reviews and NOPED right out. I'd cry forever if what happened to those birds happened to mine.

My dad bought me the Squirrel Solutions one for my birthday. It's this one and also has the thing where anything heavier than so many ounces closes the ports: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AUFIQ1U/

The squirrels seemed to figure out pretty quick they couldn't get in it. We had one trying a few weeks ago and I said it must be a "new" squirrel. They tend to sit under it and eat the seeds the birds throw out. I have mine on a Shepard Hook and I would think if the squirrel started making its move toward it, the birds would fly off pretty fast. They don't really seem to tolerate each other in my yard.

I don't know if the mama wren will return to the bird house gourd, but maybe another one will take up residence now that I've performed the pest control service. I hope so. Crossing Fingers!

So I'm walking past the window in the living room and I see the birdfeeder rocking back and forth. I look out and underneath is Mrs. Sol (giving her every benefit of the doubt.) She's sniffing around looking for stuff, not paying any attention to the feeder. Then a bird that I THINK was a woodpecker comes flying over, lands on the feeder upside down like it's a suet cage, realizes it isn't, then goes flying away. Does that 2-3 more times, Mrs. Sol couldn't care less. Then another bird that I expertly identified as Not A Woodpecker comes flying in, doing the same thing, upside down, no dice, takes off, in a second. Then I see Sol coming from the bed under the window. He gets within a foot and a half of the misses, and she takes off at 100 mph with him right on her tail, so to speak. Off my property, across the road, to the house across the street, all over their yard, into their back yard, then they emerge on the neighbors's driveway and then out of sight. OK. So I'm getting ready to go out, and there's Mrs. Sol, back in her place, and this stupid bird on top of the crook. The birds can't figure out how to feed at this thing! But the squirrels so far aren't paying attention. Maybe because they have other things on their mind. This is going to be a very long day.

Jai, that is so interesting ... I've never heard of a bird fair! I know that many people enjoy keeping birds as pets. Some of those parrots are so pretty with their rainbow colors; the babies growing those bright yellow feathers are so cute! Love the (Collared/Ringnecked?) Doves! Beautiful little dog in that one photo too! Lovey dubby

I agree, some wonderful colours there - although to be honest I always feel sad seeing birds in cages. That said, I know some of them would probably not survive in the wild... A little tip, Jai - if you open up the aperture when taking photos through bars (say to f stop 2.8 or so) the bars disappear from the image.
What are all those wonderfully bright things in the 6th photo down? Makes for a really cheerful pic. Thumbs up

Lots of colorful bird toys which keeps them active and gives them stuff to chew. When we had a parrot years ago I hesitated to purchase the colored blocks because I didn't know if it was food grade dye they used for coloring the wood. Birds chew strands of cotton rope as though they are preening themselves or their mate. Caged birds can become very stressed if they don't have things to keep them busy and active.

Was working in the yard yesterday and took the camera with me.

I think this is a woodpecker of some sort...I caught him sunning himself after a bath that I missed, then tried to track as he flew out of the sun.
