Place decorative stones on the top of the soil of potted plants to prevent cats or other animals from digging in them.

Plus it makes the plants look prettier.

Now if I could just keep the cats from EATING the plant, I'd be really happy

The rocks do work well to keep them from digging. I use the large, red, lava rock in big planters so they don't think I've set up another cat box for them.
