Thread OP

Hello. My husband and I just created a new bed in front of our house. We planted a lot of new plants including hostas, ferns, and two hydrangea bushes flanking the sides. We are having issue with figuring out what other types of bushes to plant and where. We don't want to block the windows, but we feel like we need some more bushes/shrubs. I bought 6 box woods that we just placed in the picture. They are in the black containers. Any suggestions on where to plant them? What should we plant in the center between the windows? Thanks! The split level design somewhat limits us.

Okay, so some guesses here. I'm thinking you're in the Northeast, but a gardening zone would be useful. Also I'm guessing the house is largely south facing, given the position of the sun (based on the shadows), but perhaps you took the shots in the early morning rather than in the evening.

That said, a bit more info would be useful. If it's a sunny spot during the day, your choices will be pretty wide. I can imagine a nice Butterfly bush in between the windows, just beyond the edge of the bottom of the next floor, could work. There you will likely appreciate the fat and the pretty. Of course, there are other choices depending on conditions. For me, I think I'd keep the boxwoods off to the sides as you'll likely appreciate a star of the garden in the middle.

Early thoughts... fill us in on the zone and conditions.

Hello I am in zone 5b. These photos were taken around 7:00 pm. There is not a lot of sun in the center near the windows...it's pretty shady (I know this limits the choices). The house faces north and does not get much sun. I am new to gardening and any help would be greatly appreciated!
