Prevent Algae from Growing in Your Birdbath

By flaflwrgrl
December 10, 2011

To keep algae growth from your bird bath drop some pre-1982 copper pennies in. I have what I would call a normal size bird bath & I use 7 pennies. The reason for the pennies being pre-1982 is that before that year, the pennies contained copper, a natural algicide. You could also use a small length of copper pipe or tubing, or any other copper coin. I have found this to work extremely well with the exception of those times when the temperatures stay above 90 for extended periods. Copper is not safe for fish so this would not be a good thing to use in a fish aquarium or a pond that has fish in it.

We had coons & the pennies never went missing. There were times though I would watch the Blue Jays pick them up & play with them but they always dropped them back in. You know blue jays --- they can't leave anything alone. Hilarious!

Thanks Sheryl & Maridell! Marilyn, I take it it's working for you huh?

I do this and find it helpful. I don't have to clean the birdbaths nearly as often.
I garden for the pollinators.

Thanks for relating the experience Tee. Caroline, I had not heard that about the slugs; however I never had a slug in my birdbath.

I only had 4 pennies in it, no wonder it wasn't really doing much of anything. It's helping a little, but with 4 pennies, it's not enough. *Blush* After I read to add 7 copper pennies, I thought (and then forgot) to look for the copper ones to add. Still need to do that. *Blush*

Hey, you could take a couple dollars worth of pennies and hammer 'em all out flat to cover the whole bottom! Rolling on the floor laughing
