All About Grapefruit, Limeys, and Orange Conservatories

Most of us are aware that we need a certain amount of Vitamin C daily in order to maintain optimal good health, but winter is a time when our bodies may need additional amounts of this vital nutrient. Citrus fruits such as grapefruit, limes, lemons, and oranges are a great-tasting way to add more Vitamin C to our diets. You may even decide to grow your own.

From Wikipedia:
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice have the potential to interact with numerous drugs. A number of organic compounds, identified as furanocoumarin derivatives, interfere with the hepatic and intestinal enzyme cytochrome P450 isoform CYP3A4 and are therefore primarily responsible for the interaction. However, bioactive compounds in grapefruit juice may also interfere with P-glycoprotein and organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs) either increasing or decreasing bioavailability of a number of drugs. Pomelo (the Asian fruit which was crossed with an orange to produce grapefruit) also contains high amounts of furanocoumarin derivatives.

I didn't know Grapefruit was a cross between an orange and a Pomelo.

The compounds causing the reactions with medications, comes from the Pomelo.
What a bummer. I used to eat grapefruit all the time, loved it. I can't have it anymore. : (

The link about adverse reactions in the article links to Harvard Medical School and they have a lot of information about drug interactions, reactions, and so forth. It's a good resource, IMHO.

I grew a Pomelo in CA. It's also the one of the hybrid parents of mandelos.
I garden for the pollinators.

Ann, I think I will move that tree in a better location to get a better picture.
Then enter it in database, think that is good idea.
Lynn, my husband can't eat the grapefruit because of his Cholestrol meds. It interfers with the way it work.....

Had to share this picture....not my tree. I went to get a pedicure the other day and the owners had brought their grapefruit tree to the shop for the winter. The fruit looks like monster pears from a distance. It is a Pumelo White Grapefruit.

How great is that! Beautiful tree! That's how we spelled it in CA ... Pumelo ... although they do seem to have more pith than what we call a regular grapefruit or a Ruby. That looks like the fruit I remember.

They are big ... but the ones we had contained a lot of pith. Made them bigger but not meatier. Blinking
