Harvesting Potatoes from Ornamental Sweet Potato Vines

By scflowers

Many of us are familiar with rooting cuttings of ornamental sweet potatoes to make more vines, but why let the end of summer be the end of your vines? Use this easy method to harvest sweet potatoes (made by your own ornamental vines) to propagate next season's plants, and save money by turning this annual into a perennial.

Hi,
I'm curious, can you overwinter them, leaving them in the pot?

Hamwild,
I am sure that you can overwinter them in a pot, but I would make sure the soil was absolutely dry or it may cause them to rot.
Also, my vines usually make numerous potatoes, so the pot may be overcrowded and root bound if you were to leave them undisturbed.
It may be okay to store them like this for the winter, then dig and replant in the spring.

This is my first year growing them. I have a couple in hanging baskets and a few in a container. I was considering placing them in the garage over the winter, but I wanted to see if that was even a suitable idea. I'll definitely make sure that they're dried out before then.

Thank You! I tip my hat to you.

That's also good to know about over crowding, I didn't know that! I will be sure to divide them regularly
