My experience with Japanese anemones is excessive spread by runners.

Edited to add that I consider them a minor nuisance, not a major 'invasive' concern. And I agree the flowers are beautiful. In my yard, they are readily controllable, though on the aggressive side.

I have a snowdrop anemone which is spread via seeds. Started with one plant and now have only three plants. This is probably due to my lack of weeding the area so when the seeds fell they didn't have any soil in which to take root. Rolling my eyes. Actually many more are welcome to grow- I like the looks of the flowers.

Controllable. I should be able to handle that. The color in the garden would be worth the work.

Thanks for your input.

Just don't plant them close to anything you care about. Anemone Sylvestris spread by runners and seeds. Honorine Jobert is not aggressive in my garden. It is currently blooming. This will definitely be over this week as the temps drop some more. I will post a picture from my phone shortly.

The white varieties are my favorite, Mike. I would love a patch of one of them. Currently, I have Whirlwind which is the only one I have been able to keep. They melt away in my soil for some reason.

I like the white Snow Angel because it's only about half the height of the straight species. It is just getting established so I don't yet know about how much it will want to run.

Mike, certainly the moisture is a reason they don't do well for me but also, sometimes they just disintegrate as soon as they are planted like those supermarket basil plants. But as I said, Whirlwind has stayed a couple of years and did even better this summer despite the conditions. I was going to move them but after this back and forth, I will just leave them alone.

Snow Angel is very pretty, Scott.

Another plant I regret planting is Orixa japonica. It is a shrub about the size of a shrub honeysuckle. It has pretty glossy green foliage but flowers are forgettable. It has spread relentlessly through my wooded property. I've had to repeatedly raze the shrubs to the ground with a chainsaw, then continuously remove the regrowth. I think I'm making headway, but it's been a major chore.

I had this one on my wishlist for possible shrubs to buy. Guess not anymore Thumbs down

I regret ever having mint, horseradish and virginia creeper. The first two I planted myself and the latter is compliments of a neighbor who does not control it. The mint was extremely difficult to be rid of. It took pure muscle power -- chopping with an axe and digging with a shovel which I thought was surely going to break. I still have mint but it is growing in a large pot where I can keep an eye on its spread.

The horseradish was also extremely tough to eliminate as every tiny piece of the root left behind after digging produced another plant. I swear those roots were growing to the centre of the earth they were so long. After many years I was finally free and clear of them.

As for the virginia creeper, sure it is a pretty red in the fall but that is about all it has going for it. It doesn't produce any pretty, colorful flowers. All it produces is thick rope-like roots that are choking out my flower beds. These roots hide themselves in the grass of my walking paths and many times my feet have become entangled causing me to fall. The roots are also twining themselves in my hedge. It is a mess. A yearly chore for me to cut off all roots on my property and then I have the work of bagging them up and taking them to the landfill. Not fun when my time could be spent weeding or doing something else in my garden.

I got rid of the blackberry vines and poison ivy in the back yard, but I still haven't rooted out the English ivy, wish I could get ahold of who planted that crap!

I once planted a very pretty variegated Japanese honeysuckle vine (aureoreticulata) - it was many, many years ago. I remember that I neglected it while it was still in a pot and nearly killed it but managed to resurrect it with some extra TLC. But of course once in the ground, it quickly displayed its true character. It ran rampant and mostly wasn't even pretty anymore, since the variegation is suppressed in the shade, which predominates in my wooded yard. I still battle Japanese honeysuckle 20+ years later, though I'm not sure it all derives from my initial planting. It's pretty rampant around here and a little birdie likely provided other source material. Anyway, it's a nuisance.

I hope not, but doubt I'll be that lucky. It has survived the past 7-8 winters, and just creeps over more area each summer. I've raked it up a few times and that slows it down a little so other plants can get above it, but short of smothering the whole area, I don't think I can get rid of it. It does do a good job of keeping the ground shaded and cooler but not a team player with anything shorter than about 2 feet.
