I am sure you have gotten lots of good advice about battling pests in the garden by now.
The advice in Reid's article is wonderful advice. The more time you can spend in your garden checking and picking unwanted pests off of your plants the better.
But to answer your question completely I think it would help to know what pests you are having trouble with. If you have pictures of the damage that is helpful as well.

My plectranthus was healthy about a week ago and now the leaves are riddled. I can not see any kind of critter but it leaves little black specks on the step around the base of the pot. I have been spraying it with soapy water but it doesn't seem to get rid of them.
