I might add that the hummers here wait impatiently for the native penstemons to bloom! I remember seeing a hummer rush up to a penstemon that was almost open, only to stop when it realized it couldn't use it yet! I have the Hill Country Penstemon (Penstemon triflorus). Fox-Glove (Penstemon cobaea) and Cut-Leaf Penstemon (Penstemon baccharifolius). The P. triflorus and P. cobaea have crossed over the years, so I have their hybrid form also, which I haven't named yet. Hummers also love my native Rose Pavonia (Pavonia lasiopetala), which is in the hibiscus family.
I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. E. B.White

The one that attracts the most hummers in my yard is

Centaurea Montana (a perennial form of bachelor button or cornflower - it has lots of names)

Oddly I've never seen it on lists before, but they came to that before they came to feeders, and it's super easy to grow here.

In early summer, our coral honeysuckle gets a lot of attention. Once the mimosa starts blooming, though, they rarely seem to come out of that tree! They'll make an exception when the clerodendron (peanut butter shrub) blooms, but generally if we want to see them, we have to crane our necks and search the mimosa.

I have all kinds of stuff planted for the little fellers, but they seem to like my yeller shrimp plants the best. But their 2nd choice is the bottlebrush. I have coral huneysuckle as well but i've never seen a hummer on it.

Hummers here in the city go the most for my Turk's Cap (red); at our rural cabin they love the tiny little yellow and peach Stemless Evening Primrose all over the yard peeking out from the grass.

I didn't see it listed but may have missed it - it's late and I am bleary-eyed. This is not a flower per se, it's a veggie but hummingbirds just absolutely love scarlet runner beans. If a person loves hummingbirds and has room in the garden it is worth planting some.

Great idea! I've heard they can tolerate a bit of shade, also. I have a corner where milkweeds (A. syriacus) volunteered this year, and I'm adding runner beans there next year. They'd also grow up sunflower stalks.

If you grow sunflowers, try to put in varieties that have pollen. That's been bred out of a lot of the varieties grown for cut flowers.

Kalanchoe - blossfeldiana is the species I've seen hummers use as nectar plant. Other species bloom almost exclusively inside for winter @ my house. So other species might have nectar, but I don't have the opportunity to see it "used."

The hummingbird favorites in my yard that I see them feeding from daily:

Purple & Bloom Salvia
Wendy's Wish Salvia
Cuphea Vermillionaire
Spanish Flag Vine
Cardinal Climber Vine
Bodacious Hummingbird Falls Mint (for hanging baskets)
Asarina Snowwhite Vine
Canna Lilies, taller red ones seem preferred

I've also seen them feeding from Wave Light Yellow Petunias. I know Petunias are always on hummer lists, but I rarely see them feeding from them. That could simply be because I have so many salvias to pick from with more nectar, but finally caught a hummer feeding for a long time on one.

Also seen pretty regularly on these when they finally bloom.

Thanks Critterologist for the idea of letting scarlet runners climb up sunflower stalks. That would save a lot of work. I used to go oiu and cut small trees to use as bean poles. Had to make deep holes in the ground for each pole to make sure they were deep enough that they would'nt blow over in high winds. But enough of that -- I'm getting too old for that hard work. Now if only I can get my sunflowers to grow. Have planted seeds several years in a row but not one plant came up. Chipmunks and squirrels probably dug seeds and ate them. The sunflowers would have been huge if they did grow because it rained almost every second day this year. Most tall growing flowers were higher than ever before with all that moisture.

I've had that problem with sunflower seeds being eaten as well. Thinking I might try sowing some in trays in a mini-greenhouse in early spring, so I can plant them out after frost. By then, they should have a tough stem that won't be too attractive to bunnies.

That's not as easy as direct sowing, but still easier than pounding in support stakes for the runner beans!
