Great "detailed" tip Tee. I stopped using these bags years ago because new sprouts would sometimes grow through the mesh and get broken off. By putting in a pot you solved the problem and get all the advantages of the mesh bags without any other downside that I can see. Thanks!

I wonder if it could be used to protect a ripening peach or tomato? I have a ton of issues with birds going after peaches and tomatoes. Last tomato season I pulled a foot of a stocking over a ripening tomato as a test against attack of birds. The tomato grew but was confined and didn't mature. Maybe the mesh would protect AND allow the fruit to develop

The black bird netting works great for that Susie. Pollinating can still go one, sun reach the plants. Win win situation.

Trying to get things out of the bags after they'd sprouted used to drive me nuts too.

I'd be interested to know if they work to cover ripening fruit (hope so). And the idea for planting succulents in them sounds like a winner. I don't see why not. Now why didn't I think of that?? Now that I have to bring all my tender succulents inside and put them somewhere over the winter, being able to hang some of them would help a lot. I could have even more of them that way.

I was thinking about putting something in the bag, that would go down both sides and the bottom, to help the bag keep it's shape. Maybe 3 inches wide, made of metal or hard plastic? Or maybe even hardware cloth?

I wonder if the carriers you get at the nursery would work?? The 4 inch pot holders/trays that hold a dozen pots or the plain tray with no division that's about 16x16.... maybe cut down and reinforced.

*edit: whoopsie. I see Tee already sorta touched on that idea.

I think hardware cloth might work, Lynn. Could styrofoam work for that in any way?

I actually have some rockwool that holds shape like styrofoam does, plus plants will grow in it.

I must be misunderstanding, since no one has said anything about this yet.
I take this to mean putting out the mesh bags (or parts thereof) so birds can use them as nesting materials. This would be megga dangerous, with animals easily getting caught up and tangled in the mesh webbing.

They mean stuffing the mesh bags with hair & string & other nesting material so the birds can pull the material out through the holes in the mesh bags.

I was at Target today in the birdie section. You know, feeders and seed. They have tubular mesh seed dispensers that essentially looked like the mesh bags filled with finch seed. About $30 including the dispenser and the seed. Dispense is about 12 inches tall.
