Try to be more valuable than a bad example.
We use old carpets. The price is right, they smother weeds, and last for years. They might look a little weird, but in the garden nobody will care. Flip them over once or twice a year or so. Cut them to make paths.

They last a lot longer than cardboard or newspaper and don't have to be mulched. I don't know that the synthetics in them ever goes away though.
