A How-To Guide for Propagating Bromeliads

By SongofJoy

When it comes to separating a bromeliad offset, often called a pup, from the mother plant, many people develop a case of "separation anxiety." I know I did. While it isn't terribly difficult to do, there are some basic guidelines to follow in order to achieve success.

I love Bromliads. Not great at growing but love to try. Thanks for writting the article.
I do believe I have a Terrestrial and it has a strange growth on it's top right now.

I'm fairly sure you do, Charleen! And I think you do have babies. Lucky girl!

Another great tutorial, Tee. I'm afraid, in my experience, ignorance is bliss. I have lots of broms that grow in whatever soil I happen to have at the moment. I even leave some of them out to fend for themselves during the freezes. With just a sheet over them, they seem to thrive the next spring. The one Charleen has posted is the only one I can remember losing. It was a gift, and I killed it by over spraying some fertilizer on it. I still keep the carcass to punish myself!

Thanks, Charlene and Sandi.

Charlene, it's a bit difficult to see the entire plant but since your Orthophytum is blooming, it very well may have pups. Or will very soon. I hope so.

It's 18ยบ here this morning so I can't have any Broms outdoors year around like I did in So. CA. even if I did cover them. Easy to grow them there. Just stick them in the ground or glue them on a board or hang them on the lanai. Voila. Since they aren't living entirely off the soil, it doesn't matter as much about the soil component as long as it isn't water-logged.

Happy growing!

Nice article Tee! Wasn't aware the pups needed to get that large to remove them from the mother. I haven't had a bromeliad in years, but you've given me the urge to get another. My DH will be thrilled with more houseplants! Whistling

Hilarious! Thanks, Chris. I've removed pups a lot smaller than that, but I think they have a better chance if they can get larger. Especially if they had no roots with them when removed.

I hear that about houseplants. I had so many at one point in time. You could hardly find us for all the plants. I've given away a lot of mine since getting our newest kitty this past year. He got rid of a few others for me as well. Glare

Yes, it's monocarpic so the the mother will die sometime after blooming and hopefully producing pups. Thumbs up

Happy to hear that, Carol. You're in such a great zone for growing them. I used to live somewhere near where you are. In fact, the first condo we ever bought was at the corner of W. McFadden and Magnolia (I think it was) there in Santa Ana. Long, long time ago though.

Tee and Charleen, the pups will grow just below the inflorescences before the mother plant dies. They aren't at the bottom sides of the main plant. Thumbs up
