I believe fertility is part of the issue. Breeders really like LC and apparently SB. I hadn't actually heard of SB or SG myself. But I think Wild had LC for something like $85. Amazing.

Nope just looked and I guess it was somewhere else.

Probably Lemon Chiffon is lemon yellow, the other two are medium yellow with apricot tone. It is said Sunny boy has purple red flares at the petal base. Sunny girl is similar to Sunny Boy but without flares at its base.

I also think that the price depends on the potential for hybridization. I have not seen any of these three in person but got and planted Sunny Girl this fall. According to the description the flower is loose and maybe not of a perfect form, we'll see.

Coming back to Adelman Orphan, just wondering if it is the same as Fernleaf Hybrid for $20 this year (magenta, single, very early, 24" tall, their best growing fernleaf peony), it's sold out at the moment so I cannot give the link.

It would be nice to share our yellow herbaceous peonies and yellow itoh peonies next year when they bloom. Some of them are so hard to tell apart esp. the yellow itohs. I don't think I can tell Garden Treasure and Bartzella apart if I see them in a garden. Peony Shop in Europe has a Youtube video of Lemon Chiffon cut for sale as cut flowers. They are gorgeous! I got another one this year so I can use one bush for cut flower and one for admiring on the bush. My sisters love yellow flowers.

Looks like Sunny Boy has a fuller form than Lemon Chiffon.

Thank you for all the info, everyone! I too ordered Lemon Chiffon this year from Mountainflowerfarm.com, I had never heard of this site before, and can't find any reviews of it, but it's too good to pass it down Lemon Chiffon for $50 with free shipping, I will keep you guys posted when I received the root next week.

Oldgardenrose said:Adelman's Orphan was a $30 P.tenuifolia.rosea normally selling for about $150 from the experts in species peonies, HSFF. It turned out to be a very nice, unusual tenuifolia hybrid but not the species rosea. Some of these members, including myself, jumped on the bargain price. My wife ran my roots through the washing machine and ruined most of them. I had wrapped it in a wet towel after digging and she washed the towel without shaking it out. I sent a root with one eye in one of my gift boxes but I don't recall which one. It is worth nursing along as it adds a nice deep rose single flower to the regular fern leafs.

This is the only picture I have left of AO. Note the color.

Jerry, I found a page with Fernleaf Hybrid at Adelman's. Is it the same/similar to Adelman's Orphan?

I don't think that's the same one, Anya. AO's foliage has a very distinct reddish color that is very attractive, the one pictured in your link is too green. There are tons of fernleaf hybrids for sale out there, both named and not. Would be very difficult to find this one again without direct assistance from the Adelmans

That's a good one, LG, shows the red very well. The only pic I could find doesn't show it as well but shows how cut the foliage is..

I have the belief that Adelman bought peony stock from another source and was misled as to the proper id. I can't see any major nursery deliberately conning their customers. As I e-mailed Adelman, the peony received was well worth $30 and I had no complaint. I would never pay $150 for any peony, regardless of how scarce it was. Now I saw there was a peony offered for sale for $350 by one of the majors. Sticker shock!

I prefer AO and a hybrid I got from Solaris several years ago to any of the other ferries or hybrids because of the foliage color, the red tint is so pretty.

My one and only order of Sunny Boy and I received the wrong root, and from a reputable grower too. Was credited, of course, but hadn't really had it in me to put it back on the list since then.

After I saw Yan's post about Mountainflowerfarm.com, I immediately went to the website to look around and ended up purchasing 4 peonies. I got the roots today, and was pleasantly surprised at the size, quality, and number of eyes. If they turn out to be true to name, I am very happy. I will post pics tomorrow.

I finally got all my peonies entered in my database. The last 12 or so just the name. Don't have time to do the research on stats right now. Brings total to 51 - had two in my database that went to ABG so deleted them. That makes 20 bought this year. 11 sitting in pots and one more on its way from Hollingsworth. I have to get those pots in the ground ASAP although they are safe for now as the fall weather here is just lovely. For some reason I ordered another fernleaf hybrid. I have had one since 2008 so not sure what I was thinking. Also got another Duchess de Nemours. Bought one from Anya and I guess I forgot. lol.
