Picked out 42 out of approximately 700 from years 09,10,11.

This is the year they will be chosen to keep or not based on whether they
will be crossed with newer cultivars. Feel free to critique strongly, as I
have looked at the photos so much my head is spinning.

Some of them look a bit ragged, due to weather etc., but enough detail
to judge.

#1 Do not like the color of this one, nice form and edge.
#2 Great color, nice double edge with the open form.
#3 Nice Bloom, looks like it has a good bud count, something to use.
#4 If the color is correct, I would say it's the best of the five, also looks like a good bud count.
#5 Everyone loves yellow and that is a very nice one, love the ruffles.

This is my opinion and worth only what you paid for it, everyone else may see these different. Nice group of seedlings Shirley.

My fave is #5 - as for the others, I would like more plant information too ~j

I'm with Jan, more info please. Do you know bud count, scape height, and such?

#1- Don't like the color, if really good plant habits then could use something to clean the color up.
#2- I really love the color and form of this one. Nice double edge.
#3- I like this one and would use it if plant habits are there.
#4- I like the color
#5- This one is a very nice yellow, I like the soft pastel color of it and the wide ruffle is great

I like them all but #1. Don't like the color of that one either.

#2. Great color and double edge. Nice eye pattern.
#3. Nice clear white and looks good with the eye and edge not overwhelming it.
#4. Beautiful form with a large blue eye and double edge. Like it best..
#5. Beautiful golden throat leading out ot a softer yellow. Great form and looks like a 3/4 to 1" ruffle. Very nice. Like it 2nd. best.

I like #4 and #5.

I really appreciate and value your opinions.

All have nice drooping foliage. Don't like foliage that sticks straight up.
All bloom a nice display distance from the foliage. Don't like too tall or blooms inside foliage.
I really like blue-green foliage, but don't see that very often.

#1-Don't like color of it either, as we agree. It is an 09 plant, pod pollen fertile, re, 6x25 emid sev.
25in scape was the first recorded, but it was taller this past year.
Kept it cause it has wide short petals, and is a round form. Due to color and slow increase, it is
out.

The other four are 2011 first time bloomers, # 3 and 4 are pod fertile, don't know about pollen yet.

They have passed the foliage and scape height test, but do not have the details yet; that
hopefully gets done this year. They bloomed well during the season. The heat got to me last
year, as well as allergic reactions from buffalo gnats three different times, and I didn't get much done.
First time ever for buffalo gnats here. I have a bee keeper hat that hubby constructed for me to use
this year.

#3 is much nicer than the photo.

#4-This is correct color for an overcast day. This one is hard to photograph, but one I just stood
and looked at for a long time. I like lavender. Don't have many that are lavender.

I have 15 more photos. Are you interested in doing this some more? I wouldn't want to
wear out my welcome here, so just tell me what is okay.

I like the first seedling! Nice form wide petals, blunt sepals, it is a lot easier to clarify that seedling than to get those traits.

You have 3 nice seedlings to put that one with, make sure you look at the whole bloom not just the color.

I would use that seedling--I would put it with something like PURPLE SOMBRERO to clean up the color.

My views on hybridizing is that seedlings are only building blocks for cutting edge daylilies.

Went out to the garden to check dormancy. Think we have had cold enough lows to
say all of these that are pictured are sev, at least so far. Also early morning open., and
fast increasers.

I would like to check what the difference between Dormants and Semi-Evergreens is. All my Westbourne daylilies I purchased last year were listed as SEV, but they have all died back to the ground just like the dormants do. Is this what SEV's do? I thought somehow that they didn't die totally back. Would appreciate input so I can understand the difference.

I have to admit that I liked that first Seedling #1 too. I thought it was very interesting, and I love #4 too. And I really love the second Seedling #1! I hope you do keep posting these, Shirley, because I need to learn about all this with my first little batch of seedlings coming along. I think I have about 25 that have come up now, and I just bought some blue Peters this morning to start the half-strength fertilizing like Fred does. Getting excited now...

I looked up Purple Sombrero and I like it. Just went on my "to buy" list.

Only one of the crosses that I am posting pics of is a cross that has been
registered by someone, as far as I know. Been trying to choose different crosses
than those registered just to see the result, and learn from them.

Betty, I don't know what your zone is, but in this zone 6b, the Sev's turn
somewhat mushy and a whitish green color, especially after the temps
get into the teens. They don't die all the way to the ground here, like the
dormants do. There are others here who can explain this much better than
I can.

It is very exciting to see those first blooms on your babies, and it is very
addictive, I think. You will absolutely love it.

All are lovely in this group. I pick #1, #2, and #4, I like the sculpting? on #4.

Betty, it's funny how the daylilies react. I have some listed semi-evergreens that went dormant here when it was cooler and then they started to sprout up when it gets warmer. None of mine went totally underground here where you couldn't see any foliage, just the tips show. I believe I read somewhere that some dormants react to the length of days rather than the weather and that's why some dormant daylilies will go dormant even in the warmer climates. Things can get a bit confusing here with summer dormancy and winter dormancy then throw in freezing days followed by days with high 70s.

If memory serves me correct......Here is what I have read about dormants. Can go completely underground or just the tips sticking out. (if you dig the dirt from around it you will see a little bit of foliage. Now the HARD dormants are different (from centerton nursery), Daylilies that are deemed “hard dormant” die well into the ground and form hard buds during winter. You canpoke your fingers into the ground and feel something that feels a lot like a hazelnut just beneath thesurface.

Semi-evergreens can display traits of both dormant and evergreen. Some of the ones here will keep the outer foliage, but the middle will stop growing so it looks like the middle had died and then when it warms up the center will start growing again. Other Sev look almost like the evergreens.

Depending on her weather when Mary Jane evaluated them, they may have shown more Sev traits than dormant for her.
