I'm doing some limited winter sowing over the next couple of weeks--3 baggies of candy lily seed. So far my quest for candy lily has been a dismal failure....

Candy lily? I am venturing into growing lilies from seed also. I also sent some scales from lilies to a friend (BuggyCrazy) only to have my one bulb rot. Then two or three years later she offered some newly grown bulbs from the scales. I was so thrilled and so grateful. How wonderful to know this lily (Tiramasu) was still alive. The LG only briefly offered it one year at $50 per bulb.

Candy lily isn't really a lily, it's part of the iris family. They're really pretty, like a blackberry lily only with pink to purple blooms instead of yellow or orange. I like those as well but the seeds are a lot more common, wintersowed them years ago and they do great here. They bloom later in the summer so it's a nice extension of my season.

I can imagine you were very happy to get more of those bulbs--wow, $50 each and not commonly available! Goes to show what goes around comes around--your good deed of sharing created the situation that allowed your rotted bulb to be replaced. I'm sure the person who shared the bulbs was very happy that she was able to return the favor.

I have a lot of the BlackBerry Lily. They are nice in a group. I checked out the others. I like those also.

Blackberry lilies are wild flowers here. I see them in the ditches along the roads. That orange will catch your eye!

Mieko2 they will reseed a lot. I cut my seed pods off to minimize that.

My blackberry lily doesn't have a lot of opportunity to reseed--I mulch pretty heavily since we're so dry here. I do have some pretty large clumps now, though! I divided a few and took them to the last Rocky Mountain Forum fall trade to spread the wealth. Hoping the candy lily seed does well, love the blackberry lily but would like some other colored flowers...
