Hello all:
When I saw this forum, I knew I had to ask the experienced growers for their recommendations. I'm not that experienced with lilies.

I've grown only a few lilies in the past and last year planted more from Van B. Not the best experience and hopefully this
coming season I'll see all of them bloom and know whether or not I got the right ones.

I just ordered some from Faraway Flowers (Ramona Titus)but I think I need to add a white. I need something to balance the colors so I thought perhaps a white in this grouping would help.

Can you recommend a white lily, nothing too tall as we have high winds here so strong scapes are needed. I guess something that increases fairly quickly. I believe the height range on the ones I ordered are no higher than 4 feet.

Also, are there plants which I should not grow lilies near?

My picks for white/near white/cream that have the greatest chance for mutiplying are these:
Courier an LA lily


Eyeliner white with black tracing on edges


And if you like fragrance and large flowers, this might be a good one. I know I love it:
Gizmo an LO lily


All are offered from Faraway Flowers too, since you said you have an order in there already. Ramona is great about letting you add on an doing a postage adjustment as necessary. I should know, I spend half the off season deciding and redeciding, adding on and so forth.

Thank you for the suggestions but I already looked at those. Gizmo would have been a good choice except it is too short.

Any other suggestions you can think of?

AS much as i would love you to pick 'Gizmo'-heres a couple,..,Asiatic, White Ice,.,.or good old Cassablanca oriental [bulletproof] great breeder too!!! or for something different, try 'Longiflorum'..

What are the lilies in the grouping?

I would never shop with Van Borg. They have an awful reputation. Faraway is goood as is B&D lilies or The Lily Garden

The Lily Nook in Canada has a large selection but shipping is high so I rarely order from them unles its a big order and the extra hort scertificate charge on top of shippinh ,is spread out among many bulbs.

Most lilies will be taller in subsequent years...

Gizmo is about 40 inches tall the first year but can grow to 6 or more feet is it likes the location!

My error when looking at Gizmo.I went back and noticed I was reading the flower size instead of the plant height. That is what happens when reading too quickly. Okay, that is one I can add, but I also like the the others you all are suggesting. I have an order of
crocosmias I plan to do with The Lily Garden so I'll check out her site as well to see if she has any of the ones you all mentioned.


The ones I got for this spring from Faraway are Blueberry Crush , Cesar, Arbatax, Deep Impact, Beverly Hills, Harbor Light, Strawberry Custard,Dark Sensation, Tiger Edition. I think that was all so far.
The ones I got from VanB last year was Salmon Star, Red Velvet, Sweet Surrender, Yellow Star and then a mix of Tiger Lilies.

You might consider Casa Blanca, an old oriental entry still around.

Jmorth: Do any of the ones you posted need to be staked?

stake my Sweet Surrenders but the Casablancas done need them here.

Eyeliner and many of the LA lilies have very strong stems. Eyeliner held up very strong for me. And it has a lovely soft scent.

Timaru is another white Longiflorum/Asiatic (LA) lily. Unfortunately I don't know where it might be available now.

I've not had to stake any of my suggestions though speciosum grows by and sometimes through a chain link fence.

what I read on a sellers site. hmmm, I wonder if it really depends on how tall it gets?

I think it may depend more on whether the lilies are in full sun all day or perhaps shade for part of the day. Lilies that are in shade will tend to lean towards the light and have taller stems; if it is a variety having a weak stem it probably should be staked.

Julia, I live not awfully far from you, up near Oswego. Think lake winds. I never stake an lily after the first year. Some of the OTs need staking the first year for me.

I'm near Seneca Lake and yes, high winds can be a factor here from time to time too. Like this evening we are having wind gusts up to 45 mph.

Most of my gardens are in full sun and the spot I want to plant the new ones coming this year will be in full sun as are the ones
I got last year. I'm been rethinking about Eyeliner and perhaps it would make a good transitional bloom color with the dark line from the deep purples that I've got coming. I check out the two sites I mentioned but neither has Casa blanca but Van Engelen and Scheepers has it on their sites (which I think are the same company perhaps?).

I've been digging through my mountain of photos to find any pics I may have taken last season so here are a couple that I pulled and moved into a folder.
I can't be sure they are what they were suppose to be given who I bought them from but they are still pretty.

Yellow Star - notice how the one is leaning. Could this be because it is a newly planted bulb? They are in full sun facing south.



Red Velvet




Not sure what this one is. Could be from the Tiger Lily Mix but the foliage
is not the same as what I have on the other Tiger Lilies. The only other
one I got was Oriental Salmon Star.
