Absolutely!
I addition, we saw Sobralias growing in areas of cooler temperatures, I simply don't have the right conditions.

Oh I think you could grow them but I don't know if you would want to. Aren't these orchids that bloom overnight and last a day? It could be normal effort for a minimal pay off.
I know that I saw them come before us at the judging tables on rare occasions up in the New York metro area. If the flowers are extremely short lived, how can any one hope to get them there for judging in peak condition if peak condition is measured in hours!?
There might be some species that last a few days but these are more short lived than Stanhopeas, I think.

I remembered which Sobralia I had, it was Sobralia callosa. And it lasted only a few hours, truly. I remember seeing it ready to open in the morning and figured I will be able to enjoy it coming home in the evening. Nope! It was done already. I think I was lucky to see it once or twice blooming on a weekend. I wasn't crying too much when it kicked the bucket. Now this one was mounted and only about 10 inches tall.
I don't know if the tall Andean Sobralias last longer. Carol?

I didn't realize my bloom is in the database!! Smiling
It bloomed in June 2010

.....and coming back to current blooms, I am watching my Bc Binosa 'Tetraploid' opening a few spikes. This is now a good size plant, still happy in Ecoweb.

I was considering moving the plant now to the front of the greenhouse so you won't have the bare roots of Schomburgkias in the frame, but the leaves on this plant snap off with only slightest provocation, I am leaving it in place.

That is an incredibly beautiful flower! How disappointing is it to have it last hours?
In judging we often refer to that color as a "WOW Factor"! That is the wow factor in spades. I tip my hat to you.

Very disappointing, especially when it happens unexpectedly. Btw the crumpled lip seemed to have been "normal".

After seeing your successes growing orchids, it might be time for me to give up and try something else, maybe goldfish or worms. I'll become a worm farmer!! Rolling on the floor laughing Sighing!

That Sobralia has made it to my top 25 orchids. It just bumped Colmanara Wildcat off of the list. Sobralia callosa comes in at #7.

Bill, this stuff is in our blood, you will always grow Orchids! Smiling

We had a thread here called RIP...it got too long...and too depressing. Rolling on the floor laughing
A couple of years ago I visited Bok Tower , not too far from Tampa and they had this nice bamboo orchid growing in a largish pot at the entrance.

Thumb of 2017-11-08/sugarcane/12557f
I know my little one is MUCH happier in the ground than it was in the pot..

Ursula , I really like the colors and (of course) the spots on your Bc Binosa 'Tetraploid'..the flowers look quite large

I just love that one, and mine is still in a large-ish pot but seems happy. It was in the sun, but now (looking out my window at it) the house shadow has moved over it, so I need to move it out to sunnier climes again. I spray it with orchid fert, and give it a dose of regular plant fert once in a while, too.

It's been making little bulbils near the ends of last year's growths so I'm thinking I'll try planting a few of those in the ground next year. I sent a few to Alice last week to get her started, too. Hope they work for her.

That plant looks nice potted up like that. Growing it in the ground - your plant should love it!
I took a picture of one growing quite happily in Ecuador! "Machete-worthy"?

The three I have don't get that tall...at least not in pots, and the blooms last a couple of days, followed quickly by replacements. The NOID stays under three ft. tall.

Ursula, that Bc is fantastic! Lovey dubby

Hilarious! That one is one of the ones that Andy's describes as "best viewed from the balcony". I skip those.

At the last show he had brought one that someone had ordered. I hope they brought a truck to haul it home. It was about 10 ft. tall.
