I agree. I have not seen such robust roots with so many pips in a long time.

I got them all in the ground. I also had discovered that moles had ringed one of my older fernleaf Peonies! I poured a lot of water around it and then filled in with some gravely soil. I hate to think what would have happened had it gone through the rest of Winter with those tunnels around the roots. Voles might have moved in and eaten the roots. Be vigilant during the winter!!

Good thing you caught it, LG! Try putting some mothballs out, the camphor is supposed to repel moles and voles, rabbits as well.

LG, good luck with fighting with voles! I hope your peonies will grow roots during the winter and survive well.

My Sonoma Apricot was HUGE! But I managed to place it vertically into a tall pot and still had to extend it to be able to put some soil on top of the crown.

So sorry to hear that you have to deal with voles problems, LG! Luckily I have not had a problem with voles yet. I guess I have to thank a neighborhood cat for coming over to and prowling my yard searching for food. His scent must have scared potential voles away.

I totally agree with everyone about Adelman's roots this year. THey are just outstanding. I can't wait for spring.

Wow Anya, I am amazed that you can fit that root into that pot. It looks huge! Look at those eyes!

Good job fitting that root in, Anya! How big is the pot?
Looking forward to visiting Adelmans during the APS convention next May. I've seen the pics posted of the volksmarch that goes through there and have always been envious....

LG, I had moles problem too, my dog has them under control, but she also has my flowers destroyed too.
I had my last planting done for 2017. We have beautiful Maryland weather today in the 50 degrees.

Hmmph. Do you suppose it would be a deterrent if I put moth balls around my tree peonies. The mice here dig tunnels in the snow to get to what they want to eat. But maybe the smell of the camphor would permeate the area above./

Voles damaged roots on two peonies last spring.
I am trying castor oil as a deterent, but use mothballs under my back porch. I also plan to spray the fence and some sticks with spray which is supposed to make the rodents think a predator is near.

Like Planskyyd? Animal blood or wolf urine. I have tried both. Planskyyd works best

Yes, the root was 15" long and 8" wide, it looks like Yan's roots were not smaller :)

My friend was happily surprised with the roots, they were a bit smaller, we planted them last Sunday. Her fernleaf hybrid was ready to grow! Its huge eyes almost started to open. Looks like these roots were out of the ground for a while, tiny roots already grew. Cannot wait for spring Smiling
