I have been busy today cleaning up pots, and repotting plants in to bigger pots, etc...today, so got a lot done.

I promised you folks a picture of this a long time ago, when I put up the pictures of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, but am just now getting around to getting it repotted into a bigger pot. So, here is the picture of my Fouquieria columnaris Tree (Boojum Tree). I have had this plant for gosh...10 years now. It does not grow very fast at all. This pot is really to big for it, but I won't have to re-transplant it for awhile...lol! It's in a pot out in one of my rose beds that I'm in the process of pruning back for the summer. When I first bought this plant it was in a 4 inch pot. The Boojum can take up to 20 years just to reach one foot tall and another 15 to 20 years to reach 10 feet.

That is the plant from the Baja California desert. I remember seeing huge ones all through that area. I had no idea they were such slow growers, the ones there are as high as a 2 story house. They are weird looking.

Yes, I don't think I will ever get to see mine as tall as those. There are also some huge ones at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. They must be hundreds of years old at the very least. I think I read the tallest one ever found is 81 feet tall.

Two qs: one about ants in my boojum tree pot and the other about resizing? I've had it about 10 years and seems it's continually hosting an ant party. I've soaked them out but they always seem to return, and I suppose they keep the soil loose - any thoughts? (getting the leave clutter out may help...)

The other is we're probably going to move eventually so have kept it in the pot (this is the 2nd pot it's been in). Should I repot it? Thanks, Linda

Can't help about the ants, sorry.
My experience in moving plants thru and to 3 different states within 3 years is that they will take a beating/go into shock during the actual moves. Since it already looks established, let it make it to its final home and then think about repotting. Generally I think roots coming out at the bottom of pot, exposed roots at top of soil line or water running out of the pot as you are watering (no absorption) indicate need for repotting.
