"German iris" should only turn up bearded irises in a search, right? But a search for "flag" iris will turn up all kinds of irises (assuming it has been used for multiple species/cultivars, I haven't looked that close..). I just did a google search for "hanashobu" and all kinds of JI sites came up. As for "Celestial" I would skip that one.

You and Dee could choose to include hanashobu as a common name, it would be up to you guys. I like that word, myself. Maybe it would attract new members, perhaps from parts far away. A google search on that word would then bring up a link to ATP database... a good thing in my opinion.

Are we agreeing on including hanashobu as a common name? In my opinion it will educate people as well as pay respect to those people who for hundreds of years appreciated and manipulated this plant to their liking.

So let's agree on common names for Japanese irises

Japanese iris
Hanashobu
Japanese water iris ---this does bring up a lot of hits on google.

Russian iris seems to bring up a bunch of different kinds of iris, so I'm not too up with that one.

Very good. The new proposal is now:

1) Check off "Classification: Siberian" if the common name is "Siberian Iris" OR if the latin name is Iris sibirica.

Also:

2) Check off "Classification: Japanese" if the species is ensata OR the common name is Japanese Iris.

Then:

3) Update all plants to remove the species field if the genus is Iris and the species is sibirica.

4) Update all plants to add the common name "Siberian Iris" if the classification is Siberian.

5) Update all plants to add the species name "ensata" if the classification is Japanese.

Then:

6) Update all plants to add three common names if the species is ensata:
Iris, Japanese iris, Hanashobu, and Japanese water iris
