Just an idea on the original thread topic :
I wonder if huge plastic bins would be better than pots for over wintering. Could be used in a number of ways?
One would be to plant the roots right into the bin with soil etc.
Another would be to place pots into bins and use bark, vermiculite or wood chips to insulate the pots in the bins ?
Some day I will experiment.

I actually have a potted peony to overwinter this year, got Antique Ivory in the mail yesterday and the ground is frozen. Temps outside were in single digits overnight but I don't expect it to get below freezing at all in the garage unless a door is left open. That hasn't happened since my daughter left for college, though!

I think putting the pots in a garage which stays slightly above freezing (maybe 32~42 F) is perhaps better than an unheated shed. My shed (no heating) is now at 23 F while the outside is about 3 F. The bottom half of the pots got frozen in this shed.

This confuses me. We know that the ground the roots are in freezes down a ways, various depths depending on where you live. Here it freezes down at least a foot or more. So why would it hurt the root to freeze in a pot of dirt?? Confused

It doesn't hurt it to freeze, what hurts is multiple freeze/thaw cycles.

Oh I forgot to say maybe for newly planted peonies in pots, perhaps it is better to have a little protection from too much cold?

Maybe how fast freezing occurs is also matters. Pots get frozen very fast, in the ground it take much longer for roots to freeze, they have time to adapt to the change (launch bio-chemical processes, etc.). My pure guess.

Makes sense Anya. Any sudden physical change never seems very good for the recipient. And as we discussed, the freeze thaw freeze thaw, much more likely in a pot that in the ground is a real killer

Yes, in the ground---the temperature changes are moderated.
A remote to a thermometer buried with my daffodil bulbs,--always lags behind the above ground temperatures.
And a snow cover helps. The air temperature, here, was down to about minus 30 Centigrade, but the remote never went below minus 4 Centigrade.

I thought I as safe but the temp is up to 45F and the snow is melted off the pots. I have no snow to cover them with. I think I will throw a quilt over them and next snowfall bury the quilt. Husband grouches about quilt getting wet and 'rotten' but that old quilt (packing type) is not anywhere near the cost of those two peonies. lol

Hi, I'm a new gardener! Just wondering what the purpose was for doing this and how long did you leave in the freezer? Thank you!

I've been waiting for an expert to chime in but I don't think you are supposed to freeze them if that thermometer is reading -20°F. +35 to +40 is a more appropriate temp.

Ignore my above comments. That appears to be a centigrade thermometer. I was confused when you said freezer. Normally, freezers are about -10°F.

We got a good snow dump so I really buried the pots. Holding in the low + teens now so not worried. I may move them into the garage in the spring if the temperature starts yo-yoing up and down.

Think positively, only about 60 days until time to begin looking for new eyes/pips. We are having near 0°F at night now but warmth is on the horizon.
