I think it might be a Corn plant (Dracaena fragrans).

It would help if you can say from which area the plant is in South Africa, there's an enormous number of plants there which are not found elsewhere.

It might also help if you can say which time of year it was in flower, there are winter and summer rainfall areas.

I am so grateful for your info and sorry, I am new to this page and is still trying to get used to everything. The plant is growing in Kwa-zulu Natal in South africa which is sub tropical. It looks like Dracaena aletriformis is indeed the plant - thank you so much for the info..
