I purchased some MG Moisture control potting mix this summer and decided to finish using it up for my wintersowing and now that I've sown 34 (1/2 gal)milk jugs, I hope the soil isn't too moist so my seed will rot. Has anybody used this variety for WS before and what is your opinion of it. It is almost gone; I may have enough left for about 6 more jugs if that many, then I will switch to something else.
Maybe add some perlite or sand (builder or hort sand, not playbox). That will allow for better drainage and it wouldn't cost very much since you won't need very much
I went to 3 garden center/nurseries this morning. #1 stop they only sold MG($12.99 for 1 cu.ft. bag, small bag of Promix Premium for $8.99 and 3.5 cu. ft. bales $49.95 Ouch! #2 stop only sold Hoffman potting mix..#3 stop is closed until Jan. 14th. sign says "Gone Fishing" but they probably have gone to Arizona to visit his brother who was the first owner of the garden center or on a cruise. Maybe that's where he's fishing! I took Gardenweed's advice and added seedless potting mix to the MG and it seemed to make a big difference in the consistency of the potting mix, making it feel lighter. Sowed 9 milk jugs(1/2 gal)today. Had enough left for maybe two more but no more milk jugs. Will hold off until next Thursday when I attend a seminar at a garden center about 15 plus miles from here with a Garden Club that meets during the daytime and has invited me to visit FREE for next two months before joining. Afterwards they are going to lunch at Ruby Tuesdays..Sound like my kind of group! Spoke to man at that Garden Center and he told me that Garden clubs get a nice discount so I will wait until then to buy new potting mix. They selll Espoma and Fafard.
I have found soils that I liked not by going and looking to see what they have out for sale to customers, but rather by asking what they use themselves in the nursery. They have been willing to sell me a bag.
$50 sounds like a lot for potting mix, but that compressed bale expands to over 7 cu ft. That's a lot of soil. It lasts a long time.
I'm running low on ProMix myself. I potted up over 30 of my coleus to 4" square pots yesterday. That ate up a lot of my soil. I haven't started wintersowing yet, so I'm going to need to get more soil soon.
I just went out and bought 3 milk crates inside ; enlarged the existing drainage holes in the bottom of my milk jugs, plus drill some more holes, enlarged the air circulation holes too. I don't want my seeds to rot! Used my trusty soldering iron and the pointed edge of an old pair of scissors. I want those seeds to have a chance of germinating!
I am finding that the hydroponic stores in my area are selling 3.5 cu ft. of ProMix for a little more than 30.00. It took me a while to find a source until a friend told me which type supplier would be handling it.
I have tried to" let my fingers do the walking for me" in trying to locate Promix BX potting mix or Fafard potting mix..you would not believe the various price range on this product..3.8 cu. ft. #1 store was $49.95, #2 is asking $39.95 but it is 20 miles away, #3 $49.95 #4 $58.95...Nobody seems to have Fafard..the story I'm getting about Fafard is that all stores are sold out but Fafard is coming out with a new product/potting mix and it won't hit the stores until sometime in Feb. I found a small bag of Premier Promix at a garden Center I went to the other day. No BX..
I have 5 milk jugs waiting to be filled with seed and if I don't find potting mix for them this weekend, my husband will put them out in the recycle bin. These are already labeled and cut and holes punched in..this forces me to buy Miracle Grow today from Home Depot..but I will not buy the moisture control variety. I will buy a bag of perlite to have on hand..how much perlite should I add to the 1 cu. ft. bag of MG? Should I just mix a certain amount into my 5 gal. Homer bucket instead of pouring the perlite in the entire tub of MG? I do not have the storage space for 3.8 cu. ft. bales. Last year I bought some big plastic tubs from K-mart and that is what I keep my potting mix in and I have another one for mulch. It beats the bags getting broken open and scattered all over the garage floor.
Has anybody ever used Black Gold potting mix? One of the garden centers sells this brand. I think it has Coir in it.
People have different results with the same product for a lot of reasons. Some might be using it for indoor plants, left in a pot for years at a time. Some might be growing outdoor plants for just a few months in summer. Some live in rainy climates, others in deserts. Some are growing cacti, some tomatoes. So the results people report with any product can be very, very different. Nobody's right, nobody's wrong. We just all have favorites, and we've learned to work with and like a particular product, in our particular climate, etc.

We have one locally, and I do buy a lot of stuff there. It's probably 20 miles from my house, but it's the only place I can find a lot of garden stuff that I want. It's about the only local place I know for a lot of organic things.
