@Australis, Joshua, I didn't find a database listing for Myrmecophila 'Motes Long Shot' and when it comes to Orchids, I'm always confused as to how they should be listed, so I was wondering if you can add it to the database. Here's the link for information on the particular orchid. https://www.motesorchids.com/n...

Thanks so much for your hard work in managing the Orchids database!

Thanks, Lin! I've added an entry for the grex here:

Orchid (Myrmecophila Motes Long Shot)

If there's a specific clone you want added as well, please let me know.

Thanks Joshua! LOL, I don't have a clue about orchids or their clones; I just purchased the above orchid and couldn't find a listing for it in the database. Green Grin!

No worries, Lin Smiling

Orchid names are a bit different to other hybrids. They have two parts - grex and clone. The grex name is assigned to every plant that results from the cross of the same two parent grexes (i.e. A x B is always called C). The clonal name is the name for the individual plant/seedling that results. Many orchids don't have clonal names, as they are usually not assigned unless they have been exhibited or won an award.

@Australis
Joshua, thanks so much for the explanation; orchids are always so confusing to me. For Orchid (Myrmecophila Motes Long Shot) does the name 'Orange Belle' (1655) need to be included in the parentage data? At the Motes website it's shown as grandiflora x brysiana 'Orange Belle' (1655): https://www.motesorchids.com/n...

I noticed this one listed at Motes Orchids but it doesn't seem to have a clonal name, only a number. Does that mean it hasn't been named yet? https://www.motesorchids.com/n...

And what about this one named Mary Motes, is that the clonal name? https://www.motesorchids.com/n... and should it be added as a new plant to our database?

Sorry for so many questions but thanks again for your help; you are a great asset to the garden.org community! Thumbs up

Hi Lin @plantladylin,

Thanks for the questions - more than happy to answer where I can.

'Orange Belle' doesn't need to be included in the entry, because whilst brysiana 'Orange Belle' was the specific parent used to make the plants that Motes are selling, the grex name (Motes Long Shot) can be applied to any seedling resulting from the cross of grandiflora X brysiana. So unless Motes gives one or more of their seedlings specific clonal names (and hence I'd make a separate entry for each), the parent information needs to be the general case. You can add a comment, though, noting that Motes made their version of the cross using 'Orange Belle'.

The cross of Myrmecophila grandiflora x Myrmecophila tibicinis hasn't been registered yet, so there is no grex name and we cannot add it the database. For unnamed crosses like this one, all you can do is add it to your plant list if you have one, or add photos to the genus entry (in this case Myrmecophila) if you had photos of it. Putting the cross information into the caption is very useful, as if it is registered in future it makes it easier to find the photos.

Regarding Mary Motes, I assume you mean this plant? https://www.motesorchids.com/n...

Mary Motes is the grex name (given to all the seedlings from any cross of albopurpurea X brysiana or the inverse brysiana X albopurpurea). We didn't have an entry for it, so I have just added one here: Orchid (Myrmecophila Mary Motes)

Please let me know if you have any more questions! Smiling

Again, thank you for the explanations and the new plant additions to the database!
