I agree with wislizeni. Horridus, in both its short and long spined forms, has a generally darker hue in its spines(Black, red), and the ribs are generally an oilier green than what you have. Central spine...also less curved.

The database here will list the most recent synonyms, but not the older ones. So Ferocactus horridus does not appear because F. peninsulae has been the preferred name for at least 20 years. As Zuzu likes to say, the database does not list every synonym ever for a plant, by design. Which of course leaves you high and dry when you encounter a seller using 30 year old names (or whatever), but that's when the rest of the internet will save you. (As you have observed.) Smiling

It is likely to be a large plant, whatever the final name may be. So I think your choice of container will probably work out well for you.

Despite having a dozen different species of Ferocactus (in the broad sense), with multiple individuals for almost all of them, I still have a lot of trouble telling young plants apart. Given my refusal to use plant tags or any system of labeling here, I can (just barely) keep my own plants sorted, but random Ferocacti are often still a real challenge to ID.

*Blush* This probably had a tag at some point as I see a photo of mine here already. That's what happens when I repot and lose my tags.

Those furry buds kind of take a while to develop but when they pop, it's very fast and exciting.

Speaking of buds, and also speaking of Ferocactus, here are the first buds on my F. (now B.) histrix, about a decade earlier than expected (now age 10, in an 8 inch pot).

Thumb of 2024-04-14/Baja_Costero/0d85b4

I got this plant for the edible fruit, and I might not see any right away, but there are a couple of younger ones around in case the plant isn't self fertile (or even if it is).

Yesterday I installed two plants from that genus in the garden (glaucescens) from 3 and 5 gallon squat pots. Looking forward to having lots and lots of barrels in the ground out there.

I am a bit late, but I like to use Catalog Of Life for synonyms. Or POWO Kew. There are some anomalies and discrepancies between these databases, but that's where other sources come into play.

And, there are always species which are under dispute, or just haven't been updated.

If a name is still being used on labels, &/or in print in books, it's worth adding to the DB, IMVHO.

tigerpaws said: Thank you Gigi. that video is a keeper. My heart is melting, all those cactus flowers! Some good tips like removing the spent flowers from previous years blooms. She uses tomato fertilizer 1/2 strength and pours the liquid right over the cacti. I had always tried not to get my cacti wet, just the soil, but I suppose the fertilizer gets absorbed by pores in the cactus as well as by the roots. I have a huge container of tomato fertilizer in the basement which I am going to mix up and try her method once it warms up a bit more outside.

Are these buds perhaps from me feeding these tomato fertilizer? Or normal from coming out of winter? I was going to repot but now I have to wait after these are done blooming:

@Baja_Costero , I have some that develop those furry buds, but they always dry out and fell-off before blooming, not sure what happened, maybe it's too dry? Or they just can not flower in here.

@Gigi, your fertilizer may do the trick, as it has high P and K in it.

Hurray! I might start using it on my growing cacti collection. I wonder if I can make my dragon fruit give me more blooms and fruit? Plus I will supplement with AgroThrive as it is not supposed to cause fertilizer burn.

That looks like Echinopsis or similar, South American plant. Some Echinopsis plants will drop their buds for no particular reason I can tell, though obviously there must be a reason.

"Cactus" is just a misapplied common name, I believe. I don't think it's the cultivar name.
