I have lived on five acres in Lillian Alabama since 1990, surrounded by woods on all four sides and never had a problem with deer until this summer. They have always been here but stayed in the woods until we had the drought this summer, now there are at least four that show up day and night. They are eating the daylilies and have destroyed the winter garden. I have put deer fencing around the hybridizing area but the seedling area is to large and would be to much of a problem and expense to fence since I use a tractor with a tiller to rework the six sixty foot beds. My question is has anyone used the ultrasonic things that suppose to repel deer. They work like a dog whistle and cost about $60. Or any other suggestions that may help.

I did buy three of the ultrasonic things after reading the reviews on several different types. They worked really well for about two months then had no effect on the deer. The only thing that worked was applying chicken litter (4-4-4) every two weeks. Now the seedling area is also fenced as of yesterday.

Fred, glad that you got the seedling beds fenced off. Once they discovered your garden you knew they were going to return.

my neighbors half dozen chickens are all over my yard and the deer are not bothered at all by them. The chickens have did just as much damage as the deer, or more actually.

Mike the deer never left, just avoided the daylilies.

Frillylily there is a big difference in a half dozen chickens and applying 50# bags of chicken litter, I also about how chickens can scratch and did holes.

My garden is impossible to fence, so I rely on diligent application of milorganite, blood/bone meal, a homemade concoction made with garlic, hot sauce, and rotten eggs, and Liquid Fence. I also have Deer No No placed throughout. I think the key with any of the odor-based detergents is frequent application and rotating your arsenal. They can get used to even the worst smells, so keep those revolting odors exciting and new!

I have never used the chicken liter, does it have an odor? I wonder why it keeps the deer away?
The chickens actually 'scratched' up about $100 of plants. They laid on the ground and pretty much dried up and died before I realized what happened.
I replanted what I could, but it was so late in the year by then-1st of dec that I am not expecting much. I have tried talking to the neighbor about it but he just doesn't care. I can;t actually rock the boat because I hope to someday be able to afford fencing and I need him to be on good terms to agree to that.

The chicken litter does have an odor, not as potent as what Kim is using I suspect. I have been applying it heavily every couple of weeks and the odor is what keeps them away.

Why I have NO idea, there is plenty of stuff to eat around here, and a creek nearby so I don't know why they insist on attacking my garden/yard.

My grandmother raised chickens that had their own fenced in area. Come to think of it the whole property was fenced in. Small city lot.
