I have yet to find, in my very limited ability, a rose to match or even come close to Frgrant Cloud. I have only Chicago Peace and Tropicana, which here, and to me, are faintly fragrant. The photo is Tropicana, which was labeled at the grocery store(!!!) as Fragrant Cloud. The real label was mixed in the sawdust. I know, I know, I just placed an order with Heritage Roses...

Any comments?

Mr. Lincoln, Pure Perfume, Melody Parfume', Intrigue, Heirloom, BlueGirl... to me, most of the "mauve"/purple roses are highly fragrant. I know I have lots of smelly roses, but just can't think right now. I wanna say Henry Fonda smells good.. Oklahoma, Scentimental, Dolly Parton, HoneySweet...

Ah, thanks, a good list to begin with--- I did have Mr Lincoln once, and it seemed to me to be only slightly fragrant. Does water and fertilizer make a difference? Meaning, more lavish than 'normal'? My plants all grow like mad because I give them lots of varied foods.

Mr. Lincoln is one of the smelliest roses out there IMO. I can sniff it a mile away. I don't fertilize that often and I am one of those evil MiracleGro people. I water only if it's too hot and we haven't had any rain in over a week. But one thing I *HAVE* noticed is that scent is stronger when it's cooler. In the heat, it kind of just .. fades? I see that you're in the Virgin Islands. Maybe it's too hot / humid there for them? I haven't a clue! Zuzu/Calif-Sue can help better that way.. they're in zone 9 which is way closer to your temps than my freezing zone 5 (which, btw, right now it's about 51degs F, but we're hunkering for almost a foot of snow tomorrow night/Fri morning).

Toni's right: Mister Lincoln is "one of the smelliest roses out there." It's as strong as any damask rose.

Almost all of the Austin roses have a strong fragrance, but it's usually a musky scent.

Fragrance is a subjective thing, though, and I prefer it when the rose smells less like a rose than something else. Madame Isaac Pereire and Zephirine Drouhin smell like raspberries to me, for instance, and First Kiss, which is my absolute favorite rose in terms of scent, smells like Freesias.

I am in a hot humid climate and Mr Lincoln is very fragrant here as is Chrysler Imperial with whom I often confuse him.

Isn't Chrysler Imperial just a breath smaller & keeps more of a red coloring when it fades? My Mr. Lincolns always "purple" when they age and are usually 5-6" across. I don't have any Chrysler Imperials, but the ones I've seen are a bit smaller.

Well, golly, I'll just have to give Mr Lincoln another try. It doesn't get so hot here, the mid nineties in August. The trick is long warm nights. Dark at seven in the summer, not light until light at six in the morning. And no cooling off, the nights are usually only ten degrees cooler than the nights.

Many things will expire here because they don't get a rest at night. Spinach keels over days from emergence. Tomatoes refuse to set fruit except for a few months, between December and April. A friend tried to grow a catalpa from seed, it withered away.

Seems that you could grow anything, but plants are too sensitive to both day length and temperature variation.

Our summer temperatures are generally mid nineties or above in the day and high seventies at night. Consistently high humidity: near 100% in the mornings dropping to 60% or so in the evening. It doesn't get dark until 9PM and is light again about 5AM.

wow, that's uncomfy as far as hot & humid. Mid summer, we're talking mid nineties in the day, dropping usually in the 60s at night, humidity on a HUMID day around 60%, but usually between 10-20%. Gets dark around 9ish & full sun again around 6am. Kinda miss NNY.. in the summer it didn't get full dark until literally like 1030pm and was full sun at 5am! I could FISH!! But the tradeoff was in the winter.. didn't get full light until about 9am and got full dark by 4. :(

Mardi Gras is a rose that has been most forgiving for me. She just plugs along blooming all season for me. She's also the first to wake up in the spring & one of the last to go to bed for the winter. Not as strong a scent as some others, but definitely worth a gander at. You might want to check Intrigue. I don't know how he'll handle the humidity (as you can see, I don't have any), but extremely strong smelling and very generous with blooms once it gets going. Same with Heirloom.

For me Mardi Gras is mostly leafless - black spot magnet.

The variety of toughness of roses is amazing, isn't it? Fine in one place, awful in another!

Souvenier de la Malmaison is my most fragrant rose. It is borderline hardy here, but with babying it is still hanging in there!

Tiffany hybrid tea (on its own roots) is also very fragrant . It is my favorite classic rose - and it also needs babying to get thru the winters and fight the blackspot in the summers. I grow Lagerfeld, but he is such a diva he only had one bloom last season. It was pretty and fragrant, but really. Yves St. Laurent is a beautiful hybrid tea pink rose. I don't grow it, but I LOVE the blooms. In a warm climate, you could probably grow some of the florist roses that I don't dare try here.

My Austins aren't as fragrant as the others, but they have lots of beautiful blooms.

In zone 11, you could grow antique and tea roses that I can't dream of growing here. Maybe Melva will chime in. She grows (and sells) lots of antique roses in Texas.

You may want to ask the experts here about root stocks for your climate. I know that people in Florida have problems with certain root stocks in their hot, humid climate. I have the opposite problem with some rootstocks not being winter hardy here - especially when exposed to the freeze thaw cycles and winter/late spring wet. Growing own root roses has been working well for me.

You can also grow Jasmine and Gardenia which I have to overwinter inside.

In our zone, 9, Dr Huey rootstock does very well. So well in fact that it often wipes out its graft and thrives on its own.
