O.k. got it, about the Opera. A fitting tribute.
I am not quite certain what color I was thinking of when I came up with that puce, but somehow there must have been a misfire in one of those neurons upstairs! But if you replaced the c with a k, you might get somewhat of an idea Sticking tongue out Which was why I didn't care for the color of that particular Iris...

I am rather certain I could use a more descriptive word, but didn't really want to even attempt to make anyone nauseated... The exact word for the color eludes me & fortunately may be why I can't recall it. But suffice to say, it was enough for an across the street neighbor to plant about ten different varieties of beautifully blooming tall bearded Iris, near their curb. I thought it was done, to try to give them a hint, that there were other colors than that particular one.
But, they made a huge border on that corner lot & filled it entirely, with that very same one!

@evelyninthegarden At first, I thought it was ''Edith Wolford'', but must have been something fairly similar, but nobody wanted, but that person growing it & planting it extensively! I am talking about two very large, mass plantings of it.

Apparently, I am one of those people, confounded by the color describing puce, being a yellowish green. I'm being serious for a moment, here.... I should say, the standards were a yellowish shade of charteuse & the falls, a more purple shade of puce. But if you want to check it out, about confusion over the color puce, there seems to have been some odd confusion over it, for quite some period of time. Over which, I can not explain!

'Jurassic Park', was mentioned in earlier posts. I looked it up & a grandparent of it, just so happens to be 'Edith Wolford'.

Andrea ~ I have Edith Wolford, but she hasn't bloomed for me yet. Maybe this year. So I don't know if she will be a favorite or not. Pictures, photos, images and drawings of irises can only take you so far. They never seem to really truly capture the beauty of the iris, but they do come close, and give you an idea as to what its appearance will be.

There were 2 irises last year that were so magnificent I was taken aback by their beauty. Both were strong and the petals have good substance. This was only their first year's bloom but I was really impressed.

The first one was Chasing Rainbows!

This was so colorful and it was late blooming and just kept on blooming, even in the heat.

The second one, actually bloomed earlier - Elegance in Blue!

The second photo on this one should be enlarged to get how tall it was, just blooming in a raised bed. It really looked out of place. I moved it and planted in in the ground in the row of "blue irises".

So, these are not my "least favorite irises"! Hilarious!

Back when my Edith Wolford bloomed from a "grab bag" ..err...pot with buds and stalks and all from Lowe's, she bloomed and she is gorgeous. That was like four years ago, and she has not sent back up a stalk. I don't blame her - she wasn't put in good soil, and even though full sun, the rhizomes only got smaller.

I transplanted EW in May (might have been a poor idea) and lost one of two of her mother rhizomes - the other one is really tiny, but seems to be rebounding!

For the little bit I saw Edith Wolford in bloom, she was gorgeous, and had a lot of blooms. I'm going to grab myself another EW at some point - hopefully, the one I have recovers and eventually blooms to her full beauty again!

I agree with Evelyn....Edith Wolford is NOT my least favourite iris. Merely more of a sentiment is all hehe.

I don't think of Edith Wolford as being greenish-yellow particularly... I was looking at my pictures of it, and It does have a bit of blue up the center of the standards, which may make it read more on the chartreuse side of yellow. Some pictures, the standards were a nice bright yellow, and some paler.. I did see a note on one of the pictures to combine it with County Cork (in background of 2nd picture), which is definitely a greenish yellow.. sooooooo...

I agree with Jurassic Park.. I wasn't sure that I loved the color of the standards, but it is such an incredible performer, I have to forgive it for having less than perfect yellow standards. Big Grin

EW is a very finicky grower here. I think in the 7 years I've had her she bloomed twice, once I moved her to my historic bed she hasn't bloomed. I don't think she likes being in the nursing home! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

@evelyninthegarden Evelyn, if you go to Google images & look up ''Edith Wolford', there about two images, where the standards have a greenish tint about them. You ought to quickly be able to see, what I am talking about. I do not know if it is a case of mistaken identity, ot photoshop, being involved. But you ought to easily see what I mean, about the color.
As for the colors charteuse & puce, there is some odd assunption about "memory" and a collective one, at that ,referred to as the the 'Mandela effect". This has to do with some people thinking that Nelson Mandela had passed away, while imprisoned. There were comments, about these two colors mentioned & being reversed, due to 'false memories'... I don't exactly know how some think, about that conclusion, but there were a fair amount of opinions on the matter & their recollections.

Edith bloomed about once every four years or so. Edith is no longer in my garden and I doubt I will replace her. There are a lot of yellow and purple's and likely some will like to bloom more often here.

I want to see if EW will bloom for me again in much better conditions than she once was. It makes me wonder what would happen if those cultivars who don't perform for us had a "do better" gene placed in it that made it prolific! Rolling my eyes.

That gives me a good idea. What's an iris breed that is on the fence, that you really LIKE but won't keep it because it is not consistent?

I was thinking about giving up on Kalifa's Horn. I bought it in 2011 and I have never seen it flower. I moved it a couple of times and this year it finally grew an offset. In December it looked unwell and now I think it is had died in the heat.

I have purchased prettier broken colours since and won't miss it too much.
