Grow Your Spider Plant Outdoors

By Dutchlady1
February 7, 2012

If you live in zone 9 or 10, you can grow the 'Spider Plant' (Chlorophytum comosum) outdoors. This plant, which is native to South Africa, makes a wonderful ground cover. Just start with one and watch the baby plants spread around the mother. They can easily be moved if they get into areas where you don't want them.

I agree with Hetty.

Zone envy here...I have too many spider plants overwintering in the basement and not enough friends who won't kill them! Sad

Debbie - They tend to be available - mostly in hanging baskets - in many of the usual outlets, but if you can't find any I can imagine someone on here could share some babies...

I have a huge plant with a lot of baby plants waiting to be potted. Seems to be only one of the plants that won't die on me. Never thought about putting it in the ground.

I hadn't either until about two years ago when I went to someone's house and found them used as ground cover.

I live in zone 8 (So. Cal. High Desert), and my spider plants did very well outside. They would die back in the Winter, then as soon as it warmed up, they would be back.

I had wondered about that Sorcha. I used to live in zone 10 like Hetty but then moved to the northern portion of the state & began to wonder if the spider plants would overwinter here. Good to know. Thanks.

I put them in the ground here in N. Central TX, by tucking them in bare spots and then mulching in the fall. They don't have too much growth since they die back in the winter, but do fill in nicely.

Thanks Sue for the info. I am going to make a trip to Forest Hills nurseries at the end of the month and they have them listed on their availability list.
Great idea to use them for ground cover. Thanks everyone.
Sheila, how did they do for you last year in the drought ya'll experienced?
And finally, sun or shade or does it matter.

Wonder if I could push the zone here...might try that this year to fill in a bare patch behind the house. It's fairly protected, so they might survive the winter here. I know they love spending the summers on my front porch. Hmmm......

You know Mary, it just might work if you plant them in that location AND mulch them very heavily before winter. I'd say it's worth an experiment. You can always take some pups inside for winter in case the experiment fails & that way you would have some to start anew with in the spring.

Yep! The way I see it, as long as I keep one or two babies as indoor houseplants, I'm not risking anything. Thumbs up And I'll ALWAYS have one or two babies from this plant - it came to me as a baby from my Aunt Ruth's spider plant. No way I'd risk losing it entirely. Lovey dubby
