Thanks Karen. and yes, much of it has matured. I think I started some of those beds in 06-07 ... mostly 07 as that is when i found Daves.

I was home alone for Christmas this year. The holidays are always a difficult time for me, but this year was especially difficult. I was in pain and could barely move my left arm. I had to cancel appointments to the osteopath twice. I had run out of both aspirin and pain killers, but couldn't get to the pharmacy to pick them up. I was also very low on supplies because I couldn't get a ride to the grocery store. I don't drive. I had asked a couple of neighbors if I could ride with them the next time they went to the grocery store. They either forgot or didn't want to bother. I had ingredients on hand for lentil soup, so that was Christmas dinner, and breakfast. (I could call a taxi or arrange for grocery delivery, but that becomes very expensive very quickly. I gave up on mail order pharmacies after having too many boxes stolen/lost by the post office).

I started a new tradition. I put on some Christmas music and began winter sowing my seeds. Pretty soon, I was singing along and enjoying myself. I wonder if seeds sown while singing Christmas carols germinate better...time will tell.

I'm sorry your Christmas wasn't the best, Andi. It can be hard when you don't have any family around. Maybe look around for a friend or acquaintance who also doesn't have family nearby and you could spend holidays together sometimes. But sometimes family can be annoying jerks so... a nice hot bowl of lentil soup, Christmas carols, and seed sowing can be better by comparison. Smiling

Terese and Karen, I ha?e a question. If you start seeds inside and unheated greenhouse, would that be the same as winter sowing in the jugs? It seems like it would be the same principle???

Seed sowing is definitely therapy as Andi can attest to. Andi - I think your seeds will come up very happy with you singing to them! Thumbs up

Anita, no I don't think it's the same. Outside they get much greater temperature swings, rain, feet of snow. I think it's pretty different.

my unheated sun room does dip into the 20s, even for daytime temps -- so it would be cold enough... but you would lack precipitation, I think that may be the only issue. I have thought about it, but just sticking them in the snow is easier.

Not me- I have to get through Christmas first.

Karen

It's been a whole year since I posted the above, and now it's solstice time again, traditional kick off of the wintersowing season. Is anyone wintersowing to celebrate the solstice?

Our son is here visiting for a few days so I'll spend my time enjoying his company. In January, I'll think about wintersowing.

The same thing occurred to me, Allison. We hit 60° here the day before yesterday. Cooler weather is here now (high 42° today). Not our usual Christmas time weather. We have had some cold days and nights thrown in, but the cold just really can't seem to get a firm grip this year. And so wet! Our normal yearly precip is 41" but we are now over 71" for the year. This weather probably is good for things that need warm- cold- warm.

Our 15 day forecast is for days in the 40s, nights 30-ish. If that holds true, it would be fine for wintersowing. It's those weird 60° days that are worrisome.

I spent Christmas Eve wintersowing. So far have 80 containers out there. I still have a bunch to go. Don't have any idea where I'm going to put all these plants!
