WOW --- I have always found Calendula very hardy. I've had them blooming with snow on the ground.

I've never grown them before. Having always heard how cold hardy they are, I suspected they might not like our heat and humidity here. I only sowed a few seeds. Not exactly dear to me so if early sprouts would be lost to cold, no big deal to me.

Isn't pot marigold a common name for calendula???

Yes, I've also heard about reseeding, one of the things that scared me off. I'm only going to try a few.

It's funny--some years mine seem to reseed vigorously, and other years hardly at all. Never have found it to be a problem, though. In fact, I should plant some more this year--I think I can squeeze one more winter jug out in my box. Thanks, everyone.

Yes, that would be right. 2006 was my first year, so this is year 6 for me.

I only know that (I.e. When I started) because I kept excel spreadsheets for my first few years. Now I don't really keep track of anything.

Several of my jugs have sprouts now. Not a lot of sprouts but most of the 9 have at least a few seedlings showing. Our night temps have been around freezing or slightly below but the seedlings haven't been damaged. But they're all cold hardy things that I've sown.

I still haven't sown my tomatoes. Soon though, maybe tomorrow.

I noticed my first tomato seedlings up today. Mortgage Lifter and a red Beefsteak are peeking out. Lettuces are going gangbusters. We have had some colder days...windy, too. Right now it is in the mid 60's so a good day to be out.

I checked my jugs, here's what's up and what's not.

No sprouts yet in perennial geranium, heuchera, or helenium. The geranium were traded seeds from last year (or the year before?) so I don't know if they're even viable.

The following have a few sprouts each: cynoglossum, rud hirta, perennial salvia, calendula, baby's breath, and armeria. One or 2 calendula do look like they were nipped by frost. Funny, one seed leaf is green and one is brown and dead looking.

I finally saw sprouts in 2 jugs YAY!!! My sea holly and Indian Paintbrush both have lots of sprouts. I'm so excited--I've never grown either of these before.

Before long, it will be time to start WS the annuals. Going thru my annual flower seeds this afternoon to try to decide what I want to start.

Congratulations on your babies!

I did sow a few tomatoes a few days ago. I haven't done any other tender annuals yet, though. Our weather is nice right now but supposed to get cold again by the end of the week.
