Would it be possible to add a field in the General Plant description for Awards?
(With just a space to enter there.)

I'm waiting to hear other people chime in with their agreement (or disagreement).

We have awards for many of the specific types of plants. Do we really need it for the area that affects all plants?

Yes, many plants are given various awards and it will be a useful search criteria, IMHO. Smiling

I think it is a good idea, for example a plant given an RHS AGM (award of garden merit) means it has been trialled for many different qualities of the plant, meaning that it is a garden worthy plant.

Check out the criteria .. unfortunately the link doesn't work!

http://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/P...)

Here it is ..

It must be of outstanding excellence for ordinary garden decoration or use
It must be available
It must be of good constitution
It must not require highly specialist growing conditions or care
It must not be particularly susceptible to any pest or disease
It must not be subject to an unreasonable degree of reversion in its vegetative or floral characteristics

I can't believe we never thought of this for the daylilies!
Some people may want to search for the yearly Stout Medal Award as well as the various other awards, (Award of Merit, Honorable Mentions and Junior Citations) It would be nice to add that option to the daylily section. I'll confer with Juli to see if a check box or text option would be something we would like added to the daylily section or if a general Awards text box would be sufficient located in the general plant field.

This is what I was wondering, if we want it generalized for all plants, or to have specific entries within specific plant types.

Hmmmm, hadn't thought about that aspect.
I think I know what would be needed in the sempervivum.

AM*= Award of Merit New cultivars could be submitted to the Society for evaluation and after two years trials, outstanding new plants were given an Award of Merit (AM*)
GR* = Gold Rosette
SR* = Silver Rosette
BR* = Bronze Rosette

I am thinking the daylily one should be specific to the daylily section with just a check off so it's easy for search purposes. Honorable Mention could also be HM to someone so having it as a check would be more consistent.

We already have awards info in the Clematis database. We don't have it in the rose database, but it's probably a good idea. I can imagine lots of people searching by awards.

Well, we could add a general text field called "Awards" that applies to all plants, but then for plants like daylilies, semps, etc, that have a special custom area for the awards, it wouldn't be used for them.

(It would still be there, but just hopefully ignored.)

I have added the text field for "Awards" at the bottom.

Lynn, this is optional and having this available for all plants does not preclude the ability to add more customized Awards information on a genus-specific level.
