Hi & welcome! Like any other plant that blooms, when Coleus feels like it's time to bloom, they do.

Any progress?.. some seed grown always want to set seed no matter how much we pinch.. sadly

@purpleinopp yeah, but dont coleus produce a spear like spike that goes up, to then produce flowers and seeds?

@onewish1 i ended up pinching them bc i noticed a flower bud started to wilt. i ended up with 10+ flower buds and no seeds. i was very worried about the plant considering some people say coleus die after setting flowers/seeds

It looks like the inflorescence was damaged and unable to form normally. Your description of a non-damaged inflorescence sounds accurate.


Coleus are not annuals, they do not die after producing seeds. They are tropical shrubs. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds love Coleus blooms.

Happy to share. ;) Coleus has been the backbone of my landscaping for years, and makes a great house plant while inside over winter if it's not in a dark corner. My only problem with Coleus is finding new ones in my rural area to add to my collection. When I lived in OH, I had to choose between hundreds of choices but there are not stores like that where I live now.

Some do not perform well after setting seed .. but once complete will recover again .. in my experience anyway .. seems growth slows big time .. and in my climate not worth waiting for.. I just pinch enough to hopefully keep them going until fall

@purpleinopp there are so many coleus i wish i could get. they are very pretty and diverse you never tire from looking at them. i was advised to not get any new ones until i got the hang of the ones i currently own. funny how the ones i didnt like at the beginning have grown and bloomed the most

@Onewish1 i agree. im seeing it now more with the plants i own, even tho theyre coleus, their needs are very different. their water, light, and soil needs arent the same.

I feel the same way, I'd love to have 100 different Coleus. ;) Some are bred to perform their best in the sun all day, some are at their most colorful in mostly shade.

This plant came up as a seedling either last year or the year before. It's so much more purple in person.
