karen - it all the things i have read aboutthe subject the seesd are always covered with something. most people i talk to start them in gallon mill containes that are sliced almost all the way through and then filled with soil and then the seeds. they punch holds in the container and put the cap back on.

I use the milk jugs, but no screw on cap. It stays open to air so rain, snow, and air can get in. Holes are also punched in the bottom of the jugs for drainage.

I forgot to come here last year and post pictures of my "seed starting room" in my basement. I'll be starting my seeds the end of Febuary. This is the sink and work area. Thumb of 2011-01-20/Ladygardener1/dfaf61
This is the north facing window, it can be opened when the weather gets warm enough as not to shock the plants.

Thanks Joanne. It is so nice to have my own room, no more stopping my work to clean off the chest freezer, which was my work top before. And we have a make shift screen door on the room to keep Fred our cat out. I could not put anything on the floor with dirt in it as he thought it was his litter box. And I also had to go upstairs to fill watering cans.

Chris wonderful setup! It is very organized!! Not like mine...it's a complete disaster... Hilarious! I've been asking hubby to put in a sink for me but it's another project that he hasn't started or finished.

Donna, those picture are from when it was first set up. I had to clear off the work space just to pot up my Amaryllis bulbs a few weeks ago.
Don't give up on hubby, mine took a long time to get around to doing it. It was this winter that he hooked up the hot water, there is a laundry tub on the other side of that wall and he had to reroute the drain, as the drain and water lines are shared by the two sinks.

I love seeing photos of other people's set-ups--every one is different but they all seem to do the job ! Mine is a three-tier lighting shelving (HO t-5 lights) in a heated sun room not TOO far from my kitchen and faucets, aka work area. Then downstairs is the basement with my very utilitarian Home-Depot's finest metal shelving and shop-lights. Since I acquired the lighting set-up with the t-5 lights, I start my seeds there and then grow the seedlings on in larger pots in the basement, where I have more room on the Home-Depot shelves. I'm very jealous of those of you with a sink nearby (or a hubby who is adept at plumbing!) Oh well; climbing the stairs with watering cans must be good exercise of some muscles or other.
Sometimes I lie awake and dream of what would be my IDEAL plant and seed-starting realm: There would be the heated greenhouse with water source, etc. and orderly rows of seed-trays. There would be the heated conservatory with wicker furniture and chintz cushions and tropicals growing, not to mention the over-wintering tender container plants. And there would probably STILL be the basement/potting area with dirt spilling out of bags and a large sink for washing seed trays and gardening supplies overflowing the shelves.
Karen, I've ordered Snow White and Matina tomato seeds--thanks to you!

Yes, it is amazing to see a huge growing operation. I will take some photos next week at work. We have received tons of cuttings and have seeded a bunch of stuff. I love working there. minus what ever outside and inside it is spring

Joanne, I have met the nicest people working in green houses. They are always willing to help if you ask them, or if you look lost or overwhelmed.
I think working with plants and getting your hands in the dirt just makes for a kinder spirit.

Oh I agree about the lovely ambience inside a greenhouse. I think the earthy smells and warmer temps when all is frigid and snowy outside--not to mention the sheer beauty of little growing things--just soothes the soul and induces a peaceful, zen-like state. Unless of course, one discovers evil WHITEFLIES all over one's coleus cuttings, as I did last Saturday, and then it was all-out WAR!!!

Anyway, the Bluestone Perennials greenhouse shots were great--I have ordered from them in the past and been happy. Joanne, where do you work in a greenhouse? For a nursery-plant shop, or for a grower? What a nice place to be.

Love the image of the useful washing-machine in the basement. I never thought of that.

I work at a wholesale grower. We are not open to the public and all our clients are garden centres. I'm in sales and all my clients are within the city of Calgary. On the "off season" I am involved with many tasks, including inventory control, planning, cataloguing etc.

The facility is 8 acres under greenhouse roof. We have 50 thousand hanging baskets planned (and that will be sight to behold). It was very exciting to be a part of the planning team. What a feeling to be directly involved with deciding the varieties that would be grown and also creating hanging basket and planter recipes.
