Yeah! Now the best part is, now I can truly say that the amaryllis bulb can also stay indoors year round by the window, even if the roots are in water..well, not all water but with hydroton rocks and gel beads. It just takes awhile to acclimate and adjust but it can be done yippee! Big Grin

Have moved the plant downstairs and the bud is now more prominent..I know what this one will look like, just so excited to see it again after waiting for over a year, and getting just leaves during the wait, and having a successful experiment with it. Smiling

This is a neat experiment, Tarev.

I can confirm that your amaryllis don't need the cool dark closet treatment in order to bloom. They are perennial garden plants here, and keep healthy green leaves all year 'round. They bloom in the spring like clockwork in everyone's garden. Mine are on the north side of the house, so they have cool shade during the winter, but still keep their nice green leaves.

So if you have them indoors, they may need to be moved to somewhere cooler, to simulate a "winter" and the leaves may stop growing, but I think cutting off any healthy green leaves will just weaken the plant, overall.

The cool dark closet is for forcing paperwhites, tulips, daffodils and other bulbs that really need a certain amount of cold, winter dormancy to bloom.

HI Elaine, I guess it just depends on our micro climates, somehow this bulb needed to feel some sort of dormancy.. Shrug! who knows..I have other amaryllis bulbs outdoors too which I did not subject to any dormancy, some bloomed, some still in nada land....and it has been terribly dry here too, I think it affects them as well somehow. Our winters though mild are also cool..

For me whatever works to make it bloom Hurray! and the first aspect of my experiment too is trying to see if it can continue on living in hydroton rocks with gel beads..and it worked quite well. Dormancy or no dormancy is now a non-issue for me Big Grin

Just a photo update of this amaryllis, it is blooming now..actually a better sized bloom compared to the very first time I had it. I was just noticing too that the leaves drooping when the plant is getting ready to push the buds to open and gradually as the blooms form, the leaves slowly return to its upright position..though not all leaves, one chose to stay down..oh well. I like seeing how plump and green the roots are growing. Really thirsty.

One previously drooping leaf going back to upright position now that the blooms are out.

So that's it for this experiment! Hurray! Hurray!

Have decided to continue taking photos every year for this plant, to see how far along it will go..or maybe how far along till it breaks the glass Hilarious!

So for this Spring 2014 - this will be Year 3 in this set-up
05Mar2014 with my other plants indoors being overwintered

What will you do when it starts to form pups? I love your experiment and how it has turned out. I gave my neighbor some red amaryllis several years ago and they are in a raised bed around a tree. Every year they multiply and bloom. All of mine are in pots and not all bloom. I am fixing to make a raised bed and put them all in the ground. With any luck they will reproduce and bloom every year like hers.

Don't know yet Sandy, will cross the bridge when I get there Hilarious!

And that can be another aspect of this amaryllis I have to watch out for..when will it make its pups! It sure will be interesting to see how it shows through the glass.
